Ups and Downs of Writing an Eve Blog

Sometimes I hover the cursor over the "Publish" button after finishing drafting a post on here and don't click. I hesitate. I am thinking....

"Is this post good enough?"
"Does anyone actually care?"
"How many people will actually read this?"
"Are the only people who are going to see this those that are screwed over by their Google results?"

I am certainly not "Tremble before my awesome blogging power, eFame and super-human literacy skills you mere interwebz mortals!!!" as I don't personally think I have any of those three.... at all! I regularly read other very popular blogs such as Tiger Ears, Malefactor, Jesters Trek, Freebooted and Eveoganda which are saved in my Google Reader list (it will be clear why I have highlighted these later) and I certainly don't compare SS&S to those uber-power-houses of the blogging Nation of Eve.

I can see the hit counter for this blog, I can see visitors coming from various contries. From as far north as Iceland and Norway all the way down through Africa to Australia and New Zealand. From the masses of the US of A and across Europe heading east to Asia and the Orient. But are they coming here for my blog or are getting here via search engine results or posted links and leaving straight away? I mean, what is the reaction when some of these poor souls stumble on my god-awful fan fiction by accident?

Then, once in a while, something happens to put a smile on my face. This year has had several of these that banish the "self-doubt demon" and turn me into "Day I Got Cookie Cat" for a week. At the start of the year it was making the Blog Pack. Later I got one of my posts on here got "CCP Facebooked" which was repeated the month after for a different one. Someone linked another of my posts on Reditt as they thought it was a good post. They don't happen often, but when they do it physically shows on me! And one occurred last night.
I was playing Eve when my phone buzzed. It was an email telling me I'd gotten a direct message on Twitter.

"Congrats..... complimentary Plex..... what is this? ZOMG!"

A few minutes later the wife came into the computer room (without the shoes) and saw my face as I'm looking at the 2nd monitor.

"Why on earth are you smiling like that?"

Apparently I looked something like.....

So I showed her this.....

She simply shook her head and simple said "You sad geek" and went back to watching her Bones boxset.

The grin was not about the PLEX prize. I'm fairly OK in ISK at the moment and all my accounts are on 12-month subscriptions. In fact I aim to give it away in some form or another as a gift/prize/something.

Just being in the following list of power-house-Eve-Blogs-of-Awesomesauce, both judges and past winners, has made my week.

Judged by the writers of Freebooted, Jesters Trek and Malefactor:-

April BotM - Tiger Ears
May BoTM- Eveogander
June BotM - Me!

You are right up there with those "uber" blogs you mentioned.
Your blog is consistently good imo and you post some of the best pics.
I continue to enjoy your posts.
Thanks for all the effort you put into them.

  4. Congrats mate. Just for the record, I started reading because you'd been read/linked by at least two other blogs I'd started reading. I found the first blog I liked by wading through a single google result and then after that I just followed links on the blogs themselves. Only a 50 odd day old char and I didn't know owt at the start.

  5. You give yourself far too little credit (and sometimes editing passes when your gobsmacked *LOL*,) but you DO deserve this recognition. Congratulations!
