Fan Fiction - Rocked

Four of the ships crew sat around the table in the galley. The emergency lighting gave a dim glow to the room. It had been two hours since something had struck the ship and the primary power had gone down. It had over an hour since the captain and the the chief engineer had gone outside suited up to assess the damage. They were just returning. Life-support on the frigate was running on minimal power so they had all gathered in the galley and left other areas of the ship to cool.

"So, is it bad news?" Helena asked.

The captain placed his helmet on the table.

"A small chunk of a roid has penetrated through the outer plating and smashed the primary cooling array. That's why the reactor shut down. Anything more than 5% output will fry us all. To make matters worse, the comms array was also destroyed in the impact. We cannot call for help."

"Will 5% allow us to get home?" Brab was the mining technician. He sounded downbeat.

"No. We'd need 80% output just to initialise the warp drive. That would vaporise us, the ship and anything close."

"So we just sit here?" Helena sounded worried.

"Unless you can build and fit us a new cooling rig or comms array out of raw veldspar, then there is not much we can do but sit here. There are three ways I can see this playing out. Firstly we're in a marked asteroid belt and the next system is high-sec. There is a good chance someone will find us. Yes there is the chance nobody does. In which case, well, it ain't going to be pleasant staving to death whilst drinking our own piss."

"Gee thanks for that motivational speech capt. You've really put my mind at rest!" Gregor was the grunt on the ship. He didn't have an official job title, he was just the muscle. Handy when things got out of hand on low-sec station bars, not much use in an emergency like this.

"Well you've going to love the final possibility then. We're in Blood Raider space."

The room went deathly quiet as the realisation hit them. It had never been a problem before, the small frigate was fast and maneuverable. All of the pirate factions were treated the same, a minor annoyance. At the first sign of trouble the Solar Drift simple warped off. They were a mining frigate, not a combat frigate.

"Oh man!" exclaimed Gregor "So if someone doesn't find us, we're either going to starve to death or have the Blood Raiders drain us dry?"

"That's pretty much the outlook I'm afraid. Now if you'll all excuse me, I need a drink"

-o0o-

"There!"

The crew all had their faces pressed against the viewports in the galley. Brab had spotted something in the asteroid belt but the slow spin of the ship was making it hard to find it again.

"We're nearly fully rotated, we should be able to...."

"There it is! It's a ship and it's coming towards us!"

Everything went quiet as each person saw the vessel. It was too far away to make out any details, but the glow of the engines and the silhouette of the hull meant it was coming directly towards them.

It had been four days since the accident. Cheif Engineer Trak had died on day two. He had been trying to rig the reactor heat exchanger to the small coolers fitted to each of the three mining laser. Not only did it not work, it had fried him alive in the process. The captain had hardly been seen. His quarters were well stocked with drink and he had been busy drowning his sorrows. Maria the cook had been found yesterday with both of her wrists slashed. She had taken what she thought was the easy way out.

Now with four of them left, someone was finally coming. The tension was high. Was it help or was it something else?

"Can anyone see it?"

"No, not this side."

"There.... it's a...... cruiser of some sort. What the hell is that?"

"It's an Ashimmu." said Gregor as he moved away from the viewport and slid down the wall landing on his backside, "It's a Blood Raider cruiser."

-o0o-

The eerie red light flooded the corridor from the viewports. The emergency lighing flickered as the energy destabalisor beam from the Blood Raider vessel kept their capacitor from operating fully. The four sat behind the makeshift barrier of crates facing the airlock.

"How do we know they won't just blow the lock and let us be sucked out into space?" Gregor asked.

The captain was checking the safety on his pistol.

"First off, we'd be blown into space, not sucked. And secondly, they want us alive. They want to drain the blood from out bodies and that is rather difficult from frozen corpses!"

Helena threw up. The fear was clear on her face.

"You OK in handling that?" The captain changed the subject nodding at the weapon she carried. Helena looked down at the huge portable mining laser she was holding unsteadily in both hands. An old relic from back when mining frigates needed people in suits to cut chunks from asteroids.

"Yeah. I think so. Just point at the Raiders and squeeze right?"

"Just don't hit a viewport. That thing is a relic and shouldn't punch through the plexi-trit, but lets not test it eh?"

A beeping sound came from the captains datapad. The outer hatch was being accessed.

"They're coming"

"Right!" said Gregor, heaving his salvaging laser over his shoulder. "Lets do this!"

The captain looked at Gregor and the huge tool he was carrying. It was designed for slicing off bits of spaceships, again an old piece of equipment that had been made obsolete by ship mounted salvage turrets that could scan, cut and tractor beam all in one. No longer did people need to suit up and exit the ship to salvage a wreck. Had he made the right decision giving Gregor a device that was designed for cutting open ships? A man who's solution to everything started and finish with violence.

"The hatch!" Brab was kneeling behind some crates. He too had one of the old two-handed mining lasers. He leveled it at the inner airlock hatch that was slowly opening. The Captain tried to do the maths. The airlock was only three metres by three metres. The inner door could never be opened whilst the outer door was. So they would have to come in groups. Nine or ten at a time. Could 4 miners armed with makeshift weapons hold out against armed pirates coming in groups of 10? The hatch opened opened and the Raiders spilled out into the corridor.

The first three where cut clean in two by Gregor's salvaging laser. The captain winced as the beam scarred the outer wall near the airlock.

"Careful! You breach that wall and we're all dead!"

Gregor wasn't paying attention, he was stood on the barricade now, rapidly pulling the trigger sending short bursts of fire at the airlock. Another two Raiders fell as they leaned out from the cover of the airlock to fire.

"YEAH! COME GET SOME!" Gregor screamed over the sound of his salvaging laser.

Helena and Brab aimed their mining lasers but were waiting for a good shot. Another Raider lent from the airlock and sprayed fire at the barricade. Gregor screamed in pain as a series of laser bolts stuck his legs. He fell forward. The Raiders poured out of the airlock as soon as the fire from the salvaging beam ceased. Helena and Gregor opened fire. The first salvo took down two of the Raiders. The Captain's pistol, the only real fire arm on the ship took down another two.

"Nine." the captain was counting in his head. Another one or two in there. He thought for a moment how lucky he was to have such an old rust-bucket. Modern ships had multiple points of access and wide, open corridors. This position was defensible.

Two more leaned from the airlock and fired at the barricade. Gregor was still screaming in pain but the Raiders were careful not to hit him as the laser fire streaked over his head. The crew returned fire but the captain noticed the only shots were from his pistol and the mining laser to his right. He spun to his left.

"Brab, what's the pro....."

Brab was slumped against the wall, a blackened scorch mark was present where his right eye used to be. His mouth was open as if in a silent scream, the captain could see he was dead. He span around and fired more shots at the airlock, catching one of the Raiders in the shoulder. As he fell out of the airlock he placed another half a dozen shots into him. The Raiders would offer them no mercy, so he'd offer them none too.

Gregor had composed himself and whilst his legs were useless he had grabbed his fallen weapon and was now firing on the airlock. He took out another before a stray shot fired from the airlock struck him in the top of the head.

"Can only be one left, surely?" the Captain thought. He raised his pistol just as the airlock started to close.

"Captain?" Helena looked to be in shock. The Captain didn't know what to say. They had fought off the first wave. But could the two of them hold off the next ten? Would the Raiders bring in heavier soldiers now, it was probable that they underestimated them in the first place. His datapad bleeped again. He looked in disbelief, the crusier was undocking from them. He rushed to the nearest viewport just in time to see the cruiser align and warp off. Helena had seen it too, the relief was visible on her face. As the frigate slowly spun the asteroid field passed their view. Suddenly the viewport was blocked with a huge wall of metal. Another ship. This one was massive, but he couldn't make out what is was. The captian accessed the ships sensors remotely from his datapad. A Bhaalgorn class battleship. The cruiser must have simply called for reinforcements. A battleship would have a much bigger and heavily armoured boarding party. They had no chance.

"Captain what is it?"

The captain looked at Helena. He imagined her strung up by the Raiders, her blood being slowly pumped from her body as she begged for he life.

"It's a capsuleer! We're saved!" he lied.

"Really? We're going to live?"

"Look here." he smiled and guided her to the viewport.

"See up there" he pointed and she craned her neck to see what he was pointing at as he slowly unholstered his pistol and brought it up behind her back.

"There..." he placed the gun behind her neck pointing up slightly, turned his head away and pulled the trigger. He heard the discharge and the thud as her lifeless body hit the ground.

"Better than the alternative." he thought.

He started running. Within a minute he was in the engine room and at the master control panel. For some reason the pirate battleship was not neutralising their energy systems. They must have realised by now that the frigate was disabled. The captain disabled the safety protocols on the reactor and warp drive and plotted a route. He knew the ship would never get into warp. The only two other things that he did know is that they'd never get any of his blood and that he'd take some of them with him. His datapad showed the airlock was being opened. He hit the engage command and the warp drive started to spool up. The reactors containment field instantly overheated and failed without the cooling systems online. The small frigate erupted in a ball of superheat plasma and anti-matter.

-o0o-

"So is it bad news?"

"I'm afraid so. The active armour hardeners and damage control were offline at the time of the explosion. Decks 14 through 31 took the worst of the blast. Engineering was badly hit and the warp drive is offline."

"What the hell happened?"

"We think they overloaded their reactor on purpose. May be in hindsight, rescuing someone from the Raiders, whilst in a ship commonly used by the Raiders themselves, may have not been a good idea. We were broadcasting to them constantly that we were sending a rescue party. They could have thought it was a deception I suppose. May be their comms were down. I guess we'll never know."

"So what now?"

"Our capsuleer has ejected in his capsule and is returning to high-sec. He's going to bring back help."

"So we just sit here and wait for him to return"

"Yes, but the problem is.......... we're in Blood Raider space."

Pushing My Luck

Since I joined QCATS I've not really been in many ships bigger than a destroyer. Corp fleets are generally later at night so I'm tending to get some much needed solo practice in. I've always tried at solo, but it takes much more player skill than in a fleet fight. Therefore I generally die more often than not!

Last night I logged on and there were no corpies in the home system. There were a few friendlies in system, as well as a bunch of squids. I undocked a Hawk class assault frigate and warped to a medium plex. As I landed I found a squid Taranis, Enyo and CN Hookbill killing a friendly destroyer. I charged in whilst swapping the EM Rockets for explosive. I crashed into the Enyo at point blank range and decided that wasn't a great idea, so pulled a bit of range back. Not sure what was happening with the other three on field as I was concentrating on battering the Enyo. As he slowly entered structure I noticed the Taranis had come in close. The Enyo popped and I pointed the interceptor. With a scram on him my rockets made short work. My ASB's had kept my shields at around 20-30% even with 2 or 3 of them shooting me. I assessed the situation. The other destroyer had gone, perhaps taken out as I was hammering the Enyo and the Hookbill was keeping out at 25-30km with his light missiles. I activated the acceleration gate and went inside the plex as I couldn't catch the Hookbill.

The Hookbill left scan and I went back to station to repair my damaged modules. Overheat FTW!

Whilst there I decide to swap the Hawk for its hybrid platform sibling, the Harpy. Whilst I'm messing in station I see war targets appear in local. A few seconds after that I undock, warp to the plex and have ships on short range scan. Kestrel, Thrasher and a CN Hookbill. Any of those three could be an issue if fit right. But what the hell, it's a laugh isn't it. So I activate the gate and go in.

They are all near the button. The Kessy is speed tanking by the look of it so I go for him. He'll be AB fit for speed tanking and popping him will get the rats on my side evening out the 3v1. I'm not sure but I think the Kessy turned into me. Even with tracking disruptor's on me, he went down quickly as you would expect in a AF vs frigate fight. The Thrasher has got on top of me and we trade blows. Missiles from the Hookbill are hitting me but my shields are holding. The Thrasher goes down and I get a point on the Hookbill who is for some strange reason in scram range even though he's light missile fit. However, he is AB and scram fit (explains why he was near). My MWD is dead from his scram and my blasters are barely scratching him at 8km range. He's also making range being substantially faster. He gets out of scram range, I cycle my MWD catch him, he scrams my MWD and gets away. This happens two times before he manages to warp off in low armour. Damn!

I head back to station to repair modules which again have taken a thermal hammering.

The war targets return to system again, same corp as the last fight. It's time for round 3! I undock and scan. Multiple assault frigates, destroyers and faction frigates. OK lads, 6v1 and you all came in heavier stuff this time.

It the words of the Black Knight...

"OK, we'll call it a draw!"

Where is the "Ding" in Eve Online

I'm unfaithful to Eve Online, I'm ashamed to admit. I do play around. I'm a bit of a gaming slut. I justify this by saying it's like your favorite food. I love fillet steak, but if I had it for every meal, every day, I'd soon get bored of it. Therefore I like..... no, I need, some variety! Please note guys, this excuse does work for computer games and food, do NOT try this after the wife catches you! It doesn't work in THAT way.

Anyway, I do play other games. Obviously not as much as Eve which takes up 90% of my "gaming life", but now and again I have a spurt on something else. So far this year it's been Starcraft II, Skyrim, Dwarf Fortress, Civilisation V, Modern Warfare and a few others. But I'm getting a bit bored of them so needed something new to spice up my gaming life alongside Eve Online. Therefore in the week I called in at the (only) local games shop in the city (I live in a desert, computer games shops are not popular here!) to see what was out. Restricted bandwidth means downloading a game is not ideal as I'll have to be very careful with internet usage for the rest of the month.

So I poke through the shelves. Diablo III? Heard its nowhere as good as one and two and the real cash auction house ruins the "ZOMG! I found an amazing bit of loot!" from the originals. SW:TOR? Again, heard it's very "theme parky" and "Not as good as SW:G before SoE right royally ****ed it up" so may be not for me. Ha! Look at that, they have the original World of Warcraft box!

Now I used to play WoW many years ago, and I did so for a long time. It was natural progression. I started with Everquest in the late 1990's and tried most of these types of MMORPG. Everquest and WoW were the only ones I spent any time on. Age of Conan, Warhammer Online etc were a few months distraction before being left on the shelf to gather dust.

Anyway, seeing WoW on the shelf there, I started reminiscing about Everquest and WoW. I cannot compare them to Eve Online. No way. But these games were fun to play and did hit the brains pleasure centre. It has been said that many games rely on the work-reward system. You work hard (bashing 100's of spiders) and then DING (the sound that was made when you leveled up) you are rewarded with new stats, spells, equipment and the like. This hits some particular part of the brain to give you a good feeling, so you do it more. It has been said this is one of the reasons Diablo III hasn't been as successful. With the auction house there is no "high" when you loot an amazing bit of kit.

Now, never one to shy away from a controversial subject, I will ask the question. Is this "hit" missing from Eve Online?

In a few hours Drackarn will "Ding". He'll complete Gallente Cruiser V. I'm now very close to being able to fly every sub-capital combat ship in game. Just missing Amarr Frigate V and Minmatar Battleship V.

Now will this give me the same rush and same feeling of achievement as I got ten years ago hacking and slashing dragons, goblins and the various walking dead until I heard that little "Ding"?

No.

It's no real achievement to get Gall Cruiser V, it wasn't hard work or skill. In fact it was very easy. 4 weeks ago I right clicked the skill in my character sheet and selected "Train after current queue". And that's it. In some respects it gives me the same things in game as leveling up in other games. I will be able to fly (equip) a new selection of ships (gear). I have all non-racial ship classes (and other prerequisite skills) already trained so I will instantly "unlock" the Gallente HIC, the HACs, the Recons, the Strategic Cruisers (with a day of subsystems training) the logistics and all other T2 cruiser hulls in case I missed a class. In fact I could have my own personal fleet of ships given the range I can fly.

But do you get the same feeling as levelling up in a traditional XP based MMOG? Do a trick, get reward?

Nope.

I do get that "Ding" feeling in Eve Online though. I get it from PvP, especially solo and small gang PvP. You work, you achieve, you get rewarded when that scum-bag's ship explodes in a fire-death-ball-of-death. However, it can go the other way when they destroy my ship and I don't get the "Ding" feeling, just the ability to use three swear words in rapid succession F***-S***-B*****!!!!!!!!

Is the lack of a general "Ding feeling" one of the things that stops people sticking with the game. Does CCP need to implement some form of mechanic to add in the "Ding feeling" to boost player numbers. Do we need something like an XP bar? Should some professions be boosted by grinding or experience type play?

Or should we stick to telling people who want that sort of gratification in their computer game to "**** off to WoW" and hope we find enough people like us who can play the game without the "Ding"?

What do people think? Should Eve have some for of "levelling" system to pull in more players?

P.S. - Personally I don't, but thought it might make an interesting blog. ;)

Ups and Downs of Writing an Eve Blog

Sometimes I hover the cursor over the "Publish" button after finishing drafting a post on here and don't click. I hesitate. I am thinking....

"Is this post good enough?"
"Does anyone actually care?"
"How many people will actually read this?"
"Are the only people who are going to see this those that are screwed over by their Google results?"

I am certainly not "Tremble before my awesome blogging power, eFame and super-human literacy skills you mere interwebz mortals!!!" as I don't personally think I have any of those three.... at all! I regularly read other very popular blogs such as Tiger Ears, Malefactor, Jesters Trek, Freebooted and Eveoganda which are saved in my Google Reader list (it will be clear why I have highlighted these later) and I certainly don't compare SS&S to those uber-power-houses of the blogging Nation of Eve.

I can see the hit counter for this blog, I can see visitors coming from various contries. From as far north as Iceland and Norway all the way down through Africa to Australia and New Zealand. From the masses of the US of A and across Europe heading east to Asia and the Orient. But are they coming here for my blog or are getting here via search engine results or posted links and leaving straight away? I mean, what is the reaction when some of these poor souls stumble on my god-awful fan fiction by accident?

Then, once in a while, something happens to put a smile on my face. This year has had several of these that banish the "self-doubt demon" and turn me into "Day I Got Cookie Cat" for a week. At the start of the year it was making the Blog Pack. Later I got one of my posts on here got "CCP Facebooked" which was repeated the month after for a different one. Someone linked another of my posts on Reditt as they thought it was a good post. They don't happen often, but when they do it physically shows on me! And one occurred last night.
I was playing Eve when my phone buzzed. It was an email telling me I'd gotten a direct message on Twitter.

"Congrats..... complimentary Plex..... what is this? ZOMG!"

A few minutes later the wife came into the computer room (without the shoes) and saw my face as I'm looking at the 2nd monitor.

"Why on earth are you smiling like that?"

Apparently I looked something like.....

So I showed her this.....

She simply shook her head and simple said "You sad geek" and went back to watching her Bones boxset.

The grin was not about the PLEX prize. I'm fairly OK in ISK at the moment and all my accounts are on 12-month subscriptions. In fact I aim to give it away in some form or another as a gift/prize/something.

Just being in the following list of power-house-Eve-Blogs-of-Awesomesauce, both judges and past winners, has made my week.

Judged by the writers of Freebooted, Jesters Trek and Malefactor:-

April BotM - Tiger Ears
May BoTM- Eveogander
June BotM - Me!

Chuck Norris Gate Guns

What am I talking about? It is the current thinking by CCP to break up static gate camps in low-sec as per the recent CSM minutes. First off, my question is "Why are CCP doing this?". Here is my line of thoughts on CCP's possible motives.

Static camps discourage people from entering low-sec.
No doubt that filthy pirates like me, sat on a gate shooting everything we see is one of the main reasons non-PvP types tend to avoid low-sec. It's not safe. However sometimes people need to enter/want to cross low-sec. The gate guns provide them some level of protection. By travelling in a small, fast ship you can run pirate gate camps as they tend not to have fast tackle with them. Why don't they? Gate guns currently splat small ships almost instantly and the ships that can tank gate guns generally cannot lock you fast enough to catch you if you are in a fast ship. So generally, going with a fast ship meant you were safe.

So I am safe in a fast ship or a cloaky?
No. You used to be fairly safe. Now we have T3's. These can be fit to insta-lock even pods and can tank gate guns with the right small fleet composition.

So what's the issue?
CCP appear to be tackling the new player issues with some zest currently. I'm assuming that sometime this year someone has run numbers on new players and how long they stick around. The revamping of the tutorials may indicate that many players spent half an hour in game and then thought "bugger this for a bunch of banana's" and quit. I'm wondering what the stats said about those who went "Low security and dangerous? This sounds interesting. Yes I do want to proceed. WTF? What happened there? Why am I back in station? oh! /emo-rage-quit".

So what is the solution?
CCP's current thinking is to ramp up sentry gun damage over time in Decembers expansion. Forget the tankable 300dps per gun which was easy to ignore with a few BC's and a pair of logi. The idea is now to have the gun's increase their damage over time. Starting low, so that even an interceptor can tank a few shots, getting higher over time until at 4.5 minutes the sentry guns will pop a triaged carrier.

So is that a solution?
I've had a good think about this and have some major concerns. If I was an FC there are some nice tactics using these gate guns combined with standard game mechanics.

Tactic 1 - But, why's the rum logi gone?
Most low-sec fleet fights happen on gates. Faction war especilally. Now imagine two fleets of battlecruisers with logistics support. One of the staples of faction war. One side jumps into the other. One FC pauses a second and then calls a Drake primary. His other fleet members fire on the primary whilst wondering "Why the smeg did he call a Drake primary? Surely the Hurricanes should be primary??". Within a few seconds the Drake broadcasts for reps. Like many, many pilots in faction war, he's below -5 security status. The logi start repping him and whoops, the entire logi chain goes GCC. The pilot being repped doesn't need to be GCC at the time, simply being -5 is enough to send anyone GCC who assists him. With the logistics on both sides the fight is lasting several minutes, meaning the damage on those logi friom the gate guns is being ramped up. Two choices - the logi need to bounce to reset the gate gun damage, or they stay and fight (well may be not fight, rep). Same outcome - if some warp off the logistics cap/rep chain is broken and the fleet dies, or they stay and die to insta-volleys from the guns..... and the fleet dies.

Tactic 2 - The Inwincible Falcon
Same fight but this time the FC orders his two neutral Falcons to decloak and jam up all the -5's in the enemy fleet. Enemy FC has two choices. Accept his -5's are now out of the fight and continue, or to primary the neutrals. Shooting the Falcons will GCC the fleet including the logistics and if the fight lasts longer than a few minutes then the gate guns will be alpha'ing his BC's.

So fights on gates would be a thing of the past if you had -5's in your fleet (and most faction war fleets have -5's in them these days). So what we going to do? Stop fighting on gates and resort to Evemail?

From - One FC
To - The Other FC
Subject - Fight

Dear Enemy FC,

I curse you and all of your kind. May your skin turn orange in hue, and your head fall off at an inconvenient moment.

Kind regards,
The Enemy FC

P.S. Meet at Planet V for a fight?

Dear Enemy FC,

I curse you, and may all your oranges be bad ones.

Kind regards,
The Enemy FC

P.S. Warp your fleet to the Sun at zero! I don't have my sniper fleet already set up for that, honest.

Please, please, please CCP look carefully into this. You are in danger of killing 90% of fights that happen in low-sec. I know there are plenty out there who are claiming this is your intention, but I cannot believe that.

Clubbing Seals and Eating Grandma in Eve Online

The written word is perhaps one of the worst ways possible to communicate over the internet! Time after time we see things taken the wrong way, tears where there is no need, the Drama Llama released from it's stable for no good reason, emo-rage-quiting and other generalised rage over something that doesn't warrant these levels of kicking and screaming. The problem is that in many case the written word can be taken a number of ways. The men reading this in relationships will know. You say and mean one thing but somehow the other half will take it in a completely different way.

Some of you might have seen the title of this blog entry and know what is coming. Two famous internet meme's that relate to punctuation:-

With the simple addition of a comma, both phrases are giving totally different meaning. A simple typo can change the statement from inviting your granny to the dining table to turning into Hannibal Lecter. Yet in Eve Online the written word is one of the, if not the, most common form of communication. Yes, we have voice comms but think about most of the communications within Eve. Local and corp chat, Eve mails, forums, blogs. Mostly it is the written word. And in the last week or so we've had two instances that prove the written word is dangerous.

Mate-Gate (aka The Mate War)
When I initially read about this, I thought it was someone trolling. An NC dot director had an alt in Red Vs Blue. He was in a convo with a RvB officer/director or some such person and was referred to as "mate" a few times.

For you non-Brits out there "mate" is just a form of address, same as "friend", "buddy", "dude" etc.

"How you doing mate?" - "I say good sir, how are you doing?"
"Cheers for that mate!" - "Thank you my good man!"
"See ya mate." - "Good bye."

Not sure what other forms of address are used around the world (pretty sure "mate" is common in Australian and South Africa) which are equivalent but I bet there are a lot. Over here in the Middle East "Brother" is used as we English would use mate - "How are you doing brother?". Being in a predominantly American corp now (QCATS) I see "Bro" used in the same way as "mate". I am sure that every country in the world has a word that means the same.

Except this NC dot director did not take "mate" in the way everyone else uses it. He took it for a homophobic slur. Got to say, I've never heard "mate" used in that context before! Ever! If I was ever to say "Oh **** off you total and utter mate!" most people would be rather confused! Anyway, for what ever random reason he truly thought it as an insult.

So in the end the NC dot direction, aka Mr A+ in English Literature, told the RvB guy who had called him "mate" that he was going to get him banned by his "GM bro" for using that word. The NC dot then war-decced RvB. Shortly after that the Goons decced NC.

And so it started, the Mate-War, all over how one individual mistook the word "mate" in a typed convo!

Gate-Gun-Gate
At the end of last week the CSM minutes were published. In the crimewatch section it was discussed that CCP wanted to break up static gate-camps. The method they were currently working on was adding scaling damage on the gate guns. To start of the guns would hit you less hard than they do now. In fact so much so that an Interceptor could take a few hits. However, the damage would ramp up over time meaning that after taking fire for 4.5 minutes, the damage would be sufficient to even WTFPWN a triaged carrier.

This was my take on the proposed changes....

"So in the Winter Expansion the current idea that is being worked on is that gate guns will have scaling damage. As a pirate I can sit on the gate with my mates in BC's same as now, but under the new system we could have an interceptor with us. Neutral jumps in, Interceptor gets initial point, we get secondary points, Interceptor warps off, we kill neut. Gate guns open up as soon as we go GCC and the gate gun damage means we need to warp off soon, logi or no logi. Therefore no longer can we perma tank the gate guns with 6 or 7 BC with a couple of Logi. But also no more Snuffbox insta-locking-T3 gangs camping Tama all the bloody time!"

Others took it differently.

"So next week as soon as I land at a gate, if I'm worse than -5.0 the gate guns will automatically start pounding me. You will not be able to sit on a gate or have a fight on a gate if your are -5.0 or worse as the guns will destroy your fleet very quickly. As such low-sec piracy is now dead. The only fighting in low-sec will be Faction War, War Decs and at belts. CCP has killed low-sec PvP and there is nothing we can do about it! Might as well unsub now if you are a low-sec pirate."

Now I don't agree with the last interpretation and I'm sure those guys don't agree with mine either. However, we don't really know as both of these are just that, interpretations of a few paragraphs from a text document. This text document was written by someone who listened to a recording of the meeting and therefore that document is too an interpretation of what was said at a meeting (although that was checked and approved by others).

Basically the written word is dangerous. You might think your words are clear and cannot be misinterpreted. Trust me, they can be and will be.

Elsewhere in the CSM minutes, drivers for conflicts was mentioned. Examples were given such as Tech moons or simple personal hatred. You know what CCP? Just encourage people to write to each other more often! You'll certainly get a lot more rage, conflict and wars then!

The CSM Minutes - The Short(er) Version

Seriously?

165 pages of text!

Sorry guys, but the new format is too much. We don't need THAT much detail. We don't need to know which jokes got a laugh and which didn't. I know it is hard to get right with many wanting to know who said what and which camp various people were in.... but seriously.... 165 pages???

Here is my cut down version. Obviously this is my personal take on what is being said and what I feel is important, others might not agree with my interpretation of the minutes. If you want to make your own decision, read the one hundred and sixty five pages! If that is TL;DR, read on....

Introduction and White Paper

This section had a nice bullet pointed summary. All boring CSM stuffz.
  • What to do if someone's not working or being a troublemaker (hard to quantify, process could be
  • gamed)
  • Doing full transcripts of CSM meetings (an experiment is planned).
  • Importance of broad representation on CSM.
  • Bringing in the bubble-boy (#15) if someone resigns (probably not going to happen because it provides gaming opportunities)
  • Should candidates be able to scam for votes? (yes)
  • Should voters be able to retract and revote? (no)
  • Changes to the voting system (lots of research and public discussion needed)
  • Possible change to CSM's position in the organizational chart (to the Community division) may put
  • CSM more "in the loop".
  • Possible removal of the Assembly Hall (up in the air)
  • Making it easier for players to EVE-mail the CSM (good idea)
  • Discussion of roles of CSM officers.
  • Discussion of making Chairman elected by the CSM (will be done, mechanics need to be worked out)

What is a Stakeholder?
It is a thing that holds stakes. Next!

Winter 2012 Expansion.
Righto! This is more like it! Theme is still "War" or more specifically the simulation of blowing stuff up and there are to be no ‘Jesus features’ (large new shiny features). Releases will be June, August and December. Player to player contracts, iterations on the war system, continued work on Faction War, ship balancing with the smaller ships getting the work this year, little things (improving the life of the newer and average players), the front end of Crimewatch and the effects bar and HUD.

Eve Future
Need to smooth the New Player Experience. May be scrap the current tutorial altogether. Avatar based things are on the future map, but on a slow burn due to small dev team on it. Ship customisation is there, but there are a lot of issues (such as 200 custom paint jobs being loaded in a fleet fight). Moon goo - possibly remove mining altogether and move it to ring mining as the "plant POS, receive money" mechanic is "awful". However before this they want to revamp POS'. May be some form of moon-goo change in 2012?

CCP are looking at medical clone costs. Also general revamp of clones. CSM raised arena's. CCP suggest some form of player-run alliance tournament style thing?

Finally a discussion of PvE missions and possible group missions. Raids in MY Eve?

State of Incarna
Incarna prototype team working on "meaningful avatar gameplay".

[[“Sorry”, declares CCP Manifest, “it’s hot-drop NDA o’clock on this prototype!”]]

Whatever it is "the CSM was pleased with the progress on the prototype, and agreed with CCP's approach to developing Incarna content as long as CCP doesn’t ignore “Flying in Space”."

There are almost 200 clothing items done, just not turned on.

Apparently a "staggering number" of players haven't touched any of the free Aurum that was given out (I'm one of them).

Live Events
Suggest three to four live dev events a year as not to be viewed as an intrusion into the sandbox. Example being the live Sansha events or the Christmas caravans.

Suggestion of more roleplay events - "Seleene recalled a memory of a Serpentis live event in the early years of EVE when CCP event staff “stole a Gallente Federation Titan”".

Generally CCP are worried about showing favouritism in live events, both CCP and player events.

Industry and Mining
Less clicks and more batch style industry is planned. e.g. build a carrier in one job rather than having to build all the components first then the ship itself. Feeding minerals throughout a job was brought up, start a run of 100 but you only have materials for 10 and as long as you keep feeding the minerals in during the run its OK.

"CCP Arrow said they hoped they could make industry easier to manage and cooler to look at."

Industry in faction war systems should receive a speed bonus.

Discussions on that it should be faster/cheaper to build things further away from Jita.

Mining stuff mentioned. Mostly CSM throwing ideas out. Some I like -

Hans added “Put the best rings in low sec :) It needs a boost.”

Trebor added that you need to take damage if you are moving too fast and that his favorite Sci-Fi scene was from Wrath of Khan when the two starships appear out of the gas clouds and all hell  breaks loose. If ring mining could provide that kind of experience, it would be great.

CCP Xhagen asked when we could expect ring mining. CCP Soundwave said after the POS work because it would most likely use the same team - best case scenario would be winter expansion 2013.

Starbase (POS) Rework
Warning - this is all in a very early stage and likely to change massively.
POS should be space housing. Scalable from an individual players base to an alliance base. POS shield bubble to go!!!! A single structure, not anchored modules. Current POS' to be eventually retired.

New starbases to be modular and customisable. Players should be able to see a screenshot and say "That is MY starbase!". Modules to generate heat, layout of the starbase will effect cooling costs.

Starbases to be anchored ANYWHERE (exclusion zone around gates and stations) and not restricted to one per grid. You can build a city of these!

"basic modules and then we have a lot of shit you can put on them, like accessories, like solar panels and satellite dishes and heat radiators."

Turrets will have firing arcs so won't be able to fire through structures.

Ships should be able to dock but CCP wants to limit numbers and make it expensive. Mooring modules?

Possible cloaked starbases and CCP Greyscale even said "I really, really, really want to let you put a jump drive on them.". Then dsicussed limitations (48 hour counter before it jumps, the world's slowest hot-drop).

Death ray that required a ton of power and a possible module option.

Removal of POS shield bubble will effect large fleet deployments and fights.

Mooring of supercaps will be possible (only owner or corp director can undock them).

Larger bases would be harder to defend. Take down the starbase, steal moored supers!

CQ in starbases...... but what happens if it is destroyed when someone is sat on their sofa?

Eve/Dust Link
First release will Dust tying up with factional warfare. 0.0 in the future, 2013?

Beta is a bit rough and is many months behind the actual game. Beta is basically Fanfest build.

DUST battles will effect FW warzone control. Same sort of dashboard as Eve players see.

Discussions on how DUST and Eve corps should be. One entity? A DUST division of an existing Eve Corp etc.

Worry over ISK value between DUST and Eve. Eve players will have huge amounts of ISK compared to DUST players. CCP looking to control the flow of ISK.

PI modules in a district will have to pay tax to the DUST bunnies owning the district.

Eve UI

CCP Arrows current work includes-

  • A new notification UI
  • A new station services UI
  • A ship viewer, including a bubble pop-up
  • "Fitting Fantasies"

New faction war notifications.

No official date for these new projects.

Some great ideas for ship hanger and ship fitting to make things easier. Example ", enabling things like being able to test modules in your fitting window that you didn't even own". So basically a first step to EFT in game.

Need to make mass fitting of ships easier, especially for people who buy and assemble corp/alliance ships.

A graphical representation of the scan "cone" was requested but is not as easy to do as you would think apparently.

CSM suggested the ability to broadcast your overview so the FC could see what the scout was seeing. Aslo suggested a way of seeing if your target was in optimum range of your weapons.

Drones to be turned into the "orb like buttons" used for modules. Can be "reloaded" and colour and flash would tell you what your drones were doing/not doing.

Null Sec
Currently the team is focusing on faction warfare for the coming months. Null sec is not the current focus.... but will be.

Destructible outposts raised.... again..... still concerns about peoples stuff when it goes pop.

So much money in game now super losses mean nothing. They just get replaced.

Soundwave: “I can, with virtual certainty, say that this December we’re going do something about cap and supercap presence in anomalies. That is the biggest faucet we have right now.”

Went off topic onto ISK fountains/faucets.

Syndicate was hailed as an example of how NPC 0.0 should be; bordering lowsec/empire and sov 0.0 but without the ability to launch a major attack/defense against player controlled space. Venal was raised as exactly what NPC 0.0 shouldn’t be, or more specifically where it shouldn’t be.

Corp Management
The CEO should be able to insta kick any corp member at any time. However a concern over griefing tactics in hi-sec wars.

CREST tools are apparently awesome. Dev Blog being worked on.

Discussions on corp UI and roles, especially in industry.

War Decs and Crimewatch
Neutral logistics still a concern. Neutral repping will give a aggression timer in the future. If the person firing stops firing, then the logi agression will also start counting down too.

Orca swapping was mentioned. CCP worried about people losing Orca's when they don't understand the rules.

Two step: "Innocent people don't fly Orcas, man." (Room laughs)

Sentry guns will fire on suspects and start with low damage but ramp up with time. At 4.5 minutes triage carriers will be taken down by gate guns.

Interceptors will be able to tackle on gates providing they get out within the first few hits.

CCP Soundwave: "It is looking like a December release."

Potential fleet to fleet aggression making it possible to have a fleet battle in hi-sec like a 15 minute war-dec.

Discussions on wardecs and contracts, forced peace etc.

Allies need looking at as war decs are inviting the whole of Eve to shoot you.

War bill must be based on active accounts, not un-subbed accounts.

Player Experience - Launcher
Login to be moved to launcher. Mutliboxing to be made easier. EULA in launcher so it's one hit for multiple accounts.

Factional Warfare.
Plex spawning bug still and issue even after CCP thought it had been fixed. Unbalanced minor plex's - Destroyers vs Frigates. Issues with eWar on NPC's.

Possible nerf to FW mission payouts. PvP not PvE. Blitzing of missions needs to be removed.

Possible boost to industry speed tied to control.

Station lock-out should be a tier 3/4 reward to allow aggressing factions to get a foothold in the system.

Cyno jammers. Wanted by FW players, tears from others. Started off discussions on an elected militia leadership. Cap warfare in FW is limited by the threat of the super hotdrop from a board 0.0 alliance/PL. Perhaps use cyno jammers as a short term thing for the duration of a fight.

FW interface being looked at. LP earnings move from Journal to FW window?

New FW notifications.

Art Sessions
Amarr V3 are dull but this will be fixed when nebula bounce-light is implemented. CCP "not done" with Amarr appearance.

Salvage drone, Ore frigate and new destroyers previewed. New NEX items that are ready to go.

Battle recorder raised. A tool allowing video makers to replay the battle but with better camera work and zoomed in. On the long-term roadmap.

Ship Balance and Iteration
Destroyers next up to be balanced. New destroyers with Amarr and Gallente getting drone boats and Caldari and Matari getting missile boats.

New Ore frigate will give newbie friendly mining frigate.

Barges and Exhumer's to be balanced.

Rookie ships to be boosted.

Cruisers to be rebalanced to Attack, Combat and Support. Logi bonus?

Lots of discussion on the pros and cons of lots and lots of ships.

CCP - “off grid boosting should not exist”

‘Player to Player Contracts’
Very early stages in this. Suggestions - escort, training, POS/POCO take-downs and POS/POCO
defense operations, wormhole eviction/protection.

Setting up a re-occurring bill between players.

Renters and pay-for-blue. POS save contracts. Kill X number of ships contracts.

Content
Some NPE stuff and issues with current tutorials.

Incursion drop-off after the Escalation nerf. Over-nerfed?

Drone and loot changes had pleased miners and not made a massive difference to market prices.

Null sec needs more PvE.

Reverent super carrier is crap. Only two in game. Needs a buff.

Security
Botting is being wiped out slowly. Was 1400 accounts identified every 10 days, now it is less than 10.

Banned and confiscated assets - Total: 5,188,167,296,594 ISK!

  • Authenticators are very much still on the table
  • Anti-hacking improvements (client and account)
  • A lot of internal policy and infrastructures stuff
  • A lot of communication

NPE
Team Pony Express is a new team whose task is to "make players enjoy EVE more".

Short and long term goals to remove the tutorials as they are today and replace with something better.

Talk of newbie friendly corps (RvB and Eve Uni). CCP worried about being seen to give favouritism to particular corps.

Eve Economy
Inflation has been high but is dropping and following the speculation in April spiking inflation, we are now in a period of deflation.

PLEX monetary committee monitors and controls PLEX prices from "short-term disruptions, such as those caused by players attempting to manipulate the market". It uses confiscated assets to do this. No interventions needed so far in 2012.

Some players in Eve have wallets in the "low single-digit trillions".

This concludes the meeting minutes.
Thanks for making it this far. You are a true warrior.

Next time guys can we have a simple summary for each section. Not just a transcript only. Please.
