The Damsel in Distress

Fiction Friday! This is the last one for a few weeks. Next Friday I'll be posting a report about the first day of Fanfest including the official Charity Dinner. If fiction isn't your thing then your escape pod is here to Ways of the Mew where the QCats look at Poetic's latest post of top 100 corps in terms of PvP activity!

This particular story came to me a few weeks ago. The wife and I was watching some trashy sci-fi movies during a sandstorm that had trapped us inside for the weekend. I think we were watching the pretty terribad Barb Wire. Not the greatest movie ever, but the opening sideline story in the movie made me think how it could be set in the Eve-O universe. Then I remembered something from back when I was a carebear in my first year of playing Eve before I went all "KILL ALL THE PLAYERS"........

The Damsel in Distress

Kron walked through the bar area. His light suit was crisply pressed and his black shoes were polished to an impeccable shine. His jet-black hair was slicked back and in his right hand he held his datapad which never left his side. He scanned the room, everything looked good. The VIP's appeared to be enjoying themselves in their private roped-off area. Two burly bouncers ensured nobody entered the area unless they were allowed. The 'mids' weren't having any problems sat around in the various booths and at the bar, and that was how he liked it. The lows, well they weren't his concern. He ran the top floor club of the pleasure gardens and didn't have to bother with the scum. They weren't even allowed in here. A strict door policy ensured that those without the required levels of money were directed to the lower level clubs. The lows would be safely partying away in the bottom levels and forever may they stay there. Here it was the rich and upper-middle classes they entertained.

A man in the VIP area waved at him. Kron knew him as a director of a local corporation. He made it his job to know the likes and vices of all his best clients. This one was easy, Amarrian red wine from planet 2 in the Hama system and Matari girls, especially the darker skinned ones. Kron nodded to acknowledge the wave and started to walk over. The VIP already had a bottle of wine and the young ebony-skinned Matari woman, clad only in the skimpiest of lingerie, was all over him. He fingered his pocked and checked the vials were still there. He was expecting the director now wanted some chemical enhancement as usual and the exile and mindflood in his pocket would net him a tidy profit.

-o0o-

"Unidentified craft. Please note we have you on scan and our defence fleet is tracking you. Please state your business."

On the pleasure yacht the pilot turned in his chair and called back to the passenger cabin.

"Sir, we've been challenged."

A voice called back. "Good. You know the drill. Respond as agreed and I'll get ready."

"Tower, this is pleasure yacht SV Blue Horizon seeking docking permission at the Pleasure Gardens. My employer asks if Mr Kron could be on hand to greet him and if he could arrange for a private suite on arrival."

The comm channel went quiet.

"Pleasure yacht SV Blue Horizon. Acknowledged. You are cleared for landing in docking bay 94. Enjoy your stay."

The pilot breathed a sigh of relief as the ship dropped out of warp in front of the defence fleet. The Machariel class battleships guarding the remote facility would have blown them away in a single volley if they thought there was something dodgy going on.

-o0o-

Kron was stood in the reception room for docking bay 94. He was reviewing the records of both the ship and the owner he was waiting to meet. As normal protocol the control tower had sent him the registration details of the ship. He had then used that information to query several databases, some illegally hacked, to create a quick file on the ship and owner. The ship itself was a standard pleasure yacht. A common ship in the Federation for the rich and the famous. The owner appeared to be an inventor of some kind. His tax details were sketchy but it appeared he received regular huge sums of money for some patents he owned from various corporations. It was all confidential but Krom had seen these sorts of finances before. Generally the file looked legitimate but dull, this guy appeared to be a geek, a very rich geek. These were his favourite Clients. They usually would spend far too much on every vice he offered, and Kron offered them all.

The door opened and three men walked through. Kron immediately sized them up. The guy in the centre was clearly the VIP. A nondescript man who would be the police's worst nightmare if they ever wanted to catch him. Gallente, average height, average build, average colouring, average everything. He could blend into any crowd and nobody would notice him. However, his clothing was old fashioned and very smart and he walked with a black cane with a silver pommel. The two men flanking him were obviously professional bodyguards. The geek stepped forward extending his hand.

"Mr Krom I presume." he enquired.

Kron shook his hand with his usual smarmy smile.

"I am indeed Mr Krom, welcome to Kruul's Pleasure gardens. I'm afraid you have me at the disadvantage, Mr.......?"

The other man smile.

"Oh, I'm sure I don't Mr Krom. My friend, who suggested I visit, knows this establishment very well and he did tell me you'd know more about me than my mother does before I'd even stepped off the ship."

Krom smiled again and gave subtle nod. He was curious who his 'friend' was but he knew better than to enquire. With the services and vices he provided, his clients valued anonymity above all else.

"Well, yes. In my business it pays to be informed. Shall we?" Kron extended his arm towards the door and the four men left the room.

-o0o-

The director was pacing the office looking extremely agitated.

"Sir you should sit down and have some tea."

"I'm OK. Stop fussing. Dammit, I should have used an egger."

His assistant, a stern looking lady in her 40's shook her head.

"Sir, you made the right choice. You have always been against the use of violence as a solution, and have been particularly vocal against the capsuleers in the past. You know what the agent said when you enquired. His solution was a Raven class battleship piloted by an empyrean fitted with cruise missile batteries. Sir, you would have signed off on several thousand deaths just from the ships defending the facility. And as to the suggestion that the capsuleer would destroy the station forcing everyone into lifeboats. It would go against everything you've ever stood for."

The director finally slumped in a big leather chair and placed his head in his hands.

"Yes, yes. I know you're right. Just, this has somewhat changed my views on a few things."

"I know sir. I'll go and try and get an update. The tracking beacon is scheduled to pulse in 6 minutes."

With that the aide left the room leaving the director alone. With nobody there he finally broke down and sobbed quietly to himself.

-o0o-

Kron led the man into the room. The two bodyguards stopped outside in the corridor and took position either side of the door letting the two other men enter together.

"This suite is modeled on a capsuleer captains quarters from the Federation. We've obviously made some changes, the beds the empyrean use are generally not suitable for two, or three, or more." Krom said with his fixed smile. The other man just nodded as he looked around the room.

"The comms panel is here. From this you can order refreshments from our well stocked kitchens and wine store. We have something for everyone tastes."

"And the girls?" the man asked.

Krom smile. He was sure his commission from this Client would be healthy. Krom was well paid by the owner, but he did receive additional commission if he could make the Clients spend big. The commission on the room, food and drink wasn't as good as the commission on the girls. If this man was already asking about them, he was desperate for some action. That meant more money for Krom.

"I've taken the liberty and picked out a selection for you already sir. As I said previously, we aim to have something for everyone's taste."

With that Krom opened a side door and the girls filed in and lined up facing the Client. Krom went over and stood next to his Client.

"As you can see sir, we have some of the finest women in the cluster. We have Caldari, Gallente, Matari and even, as you can see, some Amarrian. All are guaranteed disease and infection free. They are given medical scans every morning so you can be sure our girls are the cleanest in the cluster. They are all highly trained and will make your every fantasy come true."

The Client stood there looking along the line for a while.

"I quite like that one and that one." he nodded towards two girls who doubled their posing and pouting when they saw his slight nod. "It's just they are....." he whispered and paused.

"Please sir" Krom whispered "We pride ourselves on the utmost discretion  You can tell me exactly what you want, I will get it for you, and then when you leave I will forget it. That is until you return of course." Kron said with a smile.

"Well......" the Client replied in a hushed tone ".... it's just they are a bit.... old for my tastes."

Krom nodded and paused to think. He was getting into dangerous waters here. Most of these girls who worked for him were in their early 20's. By the time they hit their late twenties they were moved to the lower level clubs where the Clients tended to spend less, and therefore expected less. Those ones he had addicted to drugs like mindflood would be wrecked by 25 and sent to the lowest clubs for everyone's use.

"Sir, these girls are just out of their teens by a year or so, I can assure you....."

"As I said, they are a bit old for my tastes." the Client repeated in a low tone. Krom nodded and turned to the girls.

"Thank you ladies, you have give our guest plenty to think about, but if you will excuse us, he would like some time to think."

The girls smiled and waved, blew kisses and one even pulled her top down to flash the Client. All trying to leave their impression on him. After the last girl left and the door closed the two men sat down.

"Well sir, we have a couple of girls that are just over 18 but they are very popular and very expensive." Krom started.

"First off forget the money. I have 100,000 ready to transfer." the Client held out a datapad. Krom took it but didn't even look at it, he was seeing his expected bonus disappearing before his eyes. 100,000 credits wasn't a large sum. In fact some of his best Clients spent that on a weekends drinks bill.

"I'm sorry sir. But 100,000 Gallente Credits is not going to be sufficient....."

"Its ISK." the Client cut in.

Krom almost choked. He finally looked at the pad in shock. In New Eden there were thousands of currencies in use on the thousands of different planets in the thousands of different star systems. Many systems had multiple habitable planets and some of these planets even had several currencies just for themselves. However, off-world, the main forms of currency were the credits issued by the four main Empires, also known as 'local credits'. Then there was a fifth major currency, InterStellar Kredits. ISK was much more valuable and generally used by capsuleers. ISK was difficult to covert from local credits but was seen as many, many times more valuable. The commission Krom would make from 100,000 ISK would be more than what he made in a year total in local credits.

"Well Sir. I'm sure there must be something we can do for that."

"I'm not sure, if 18 is the lowest you have then I think I might be in the wrong place."

"No, no Sir." Krom was worried that the Client might leave "I'm sure I can arrange something for you. Do you have a specific, ahem, number in mind?"

"16."

"16? I'm sure that is possible. Anything else?"

"Untouched."

Krom suppressed making a face. He knew that things now would be difficult.

"Ah Sir. That may be problematic."

"Well lets see if we can overcome the problems. I'll go to 150k ISK. And if she isn't particularly willing..... well I won't have a problem with that as long as discretion is assured and nothing comes back on me."

The money was making Krom's head spin. He repeated the sum in his mind "One hundred...... and fifty thousand...... ISK".

"I have a potential sir. May I suggest that I send up some Gallente champagne and some Amarrian caviar and request your two favourite girls from the line-up to join you for an hour to keep you entertained. I am sure I can have things arranged by then."

The Client smiled leaded back on the sofa and nodded.

-o0o-

Krom sat in his office waiting for the comm link to activate. 150,000 ISK. The number just kept spinning in his head. He could buy his own club with the commission from that sort of money! It might even be enough to buy a small club in Dodixie where he could be his own boss. The console bleeped indicating the connection had been made to the cruiser captained by Krom's boss. The holographic head of Kruul appeared.

"Yes Krom, what is it? Trouble?"

Krom hated that. Every time he spoke to his boss, he expected bad news. What did he expect? He ran a pleasure garden dealing in every illegal vice you can mention. There was always some sort of trouble going on.

"No sir. We have a new Client visiting. I've looked into him and he has checked out OK. He has 150,000 ISK...."

"150 large? In egger credits? You sure?"

"Indeed sir. Obviously for that sort of money his tastes are not run-of-the-mill,"

"I assumed that. What does he want?"

"Something fresh. Very, very fresh."

The holographic projection of Kroms bosses head nodded at the coded message. Even on secure encrypted channels it was best not to directly talk about committing felonies. Kruul knew exactly what the Client was after the first 'very' indicated under-age and the second referred to their 'experience'.

"There is that new one we got at the weekend. The med-scan indicated that she meets both requirements. Right vintage and shall we say, inexperienced."

Krom nodded as he was thinking the same thing. Some under-age rich kid, probably mad with daddy, turned up at the club with a stack of cash and some friends two days ago. She got wasted and they took the opportunity to grab her. They had a bouncer tell her friends she had left with a capsuleer and no they didn't have any names.

"My intention was to put her in the program. Doing this today will probably ruin her, she'll only be good for the lower level clubs afterwards. Then again even if she completed the program successfully and worked hard for me, she'd not make that kind of cash before we would ship her down anyway. Only problem is she will not co-operate." Kroms boss stated.

The 'program' was where they coerced the women into the 'business'. Some came willingly, others were kidnapped, sometimes to order. The willing ones were assessed  given some training and put to work in the same week. The later usually needed some form of encouragement and that was where the 'program' came in. Sometimes it was threats of violence against them or their family, some were given hollow promises of if they worked for a few months they'd be released. In other cases it was simply getting them addicted to drugs. It usually took a few months of persuasion and/or drugs to get them conditioned sufficiently to mix with the Clients but they always got there in the end.

"The Client said that any 'unwillingness' would not be a problem. In fact I get the impression that it would be an added bonus in his eyes."

Kroms boss smiled.

"OK agreed. Throw our new arrival to your sick-ass wolf for a ton of money. Well done Krom, you've just made a tidy profit for both of us."

Krom smiled and nodded, already spending his commission in his head.

Vikki was crying on the small bed. The room was small and dingy and smelt of damp. In line with many of the rooms in the complex, it was modelled on a capsuleers captains quarters. However the station owners soon realised that very few clients wanted to hire Matari looking quarters, so most of them had become store rooms over time. Vikki still wore the dress she had put on to come to the club. Her over-the-top make-up she had plastered on to try and make herself look older was streaked from her tears. She remembered getting ready, stealing a stack of credit chips from her dads office safe and meeting her friends in the stations hanger. She would teach her dad. All she wanted was a horse for her 16th birthday the previous month. But no, some crap about living on a station. They had parks and grass on the station so a small paddock should have been easy! One of her friends had met an older boy. He was 22 and had his own ship. It was only a small rust-bucket shuttle but they'd be able to travel. He'd offered to take them to some pleasure gardens a couple of systems over to go clubbing. She was sure her dad would eventually find out and go ballistic, and that was her plan.

They had a great time dancing and drinking. She must have passed out and when she woke up she'd been locked in this room. Meals and drinks had been pushed through the hatch but she'd had no human contact in two days. Things hadn't gone the way she'd hoped. She gently fingered the oversized broach that her father had given her and always insisted she wore all the time.

The door opened and she blink at the light. In the doorway she saw a man. He looked like one of those smarmy maître d' at the posh restaurant that her daddy took her to often. Just behind him was a woman with a bag.

"Hello Nikki. Your father is coming to collect you."

"Daddy is coming?" she cried with hope in her voice.

Krom nodded.

"Yes and we cannot have him seeing you in that state. This is Mary and she had some fresh clothes as well as make-up and hair products. She'll take you to get showered and cleaned up. I'll leave you two ladies to get ready."

-o0o-

Krom was waiting outside the Clients door after pressing the call button, the light still glowed red. The two bodyguards stood there still. The indicator light went green and Krom entered. He found his client on the sofa between the two women. They still wore their scant outfits which surprised Krom, he'd have expected the Client to at least sample some of the goods. But no, they were still as he'd left them. The trio were laughing and clearly having a good time.

"Sir. Your special order is here." Krom said.

The Client rose from his seat with the aid of his cane.

"Thank you ladies for keeping me company." He pulled two large denomination credit chips from his pocket and passed them to the girls. "Now if you would excuse us."

The girls accepted the chips greedily with big smiles and left via the side door.

Krom cleared his throat.

"Sir. As requested we have found a girl that should be to your tastes. Here is her ID which shows her date of birth and photo. We've taken the liberty of removing other personal identification as we assume you wouldn't want to know."

The Client took the card which was mostly blacked out. "Ah yes. She looks lovely, and excellent, you got my favourite year. Well done! And what about my other requirement?"

"Yes sir, medical scans indicate she is innocent. Also as we previously discussed I need to point out, she may not be a willing companion sir." Krom was terrified that the Client would back out now and he would lose his commission. "However these quarters have walls fitted with the latest sound suppression equipment plus as I've already said, discretion is one of our most important aspects here at the Pleasure Gardens. We also have a number of types of specialist pharmaceuticals that may help her relax. But I have a feeling you won't want them? I have a feeling you want her, ahem, lively?"

The Client smiled and nodded his head. Krom went back out into the corridor. As well as the two body guards stood by the door, there was Mary holding the girls hand. Mary had done an excellent job scrubbing up the girl Krom thought. 45 minutes ago she looked a pitiful mess, now she looked fresh and pretty. The heavy make-up was gone, replaced with make-up that was very light and discreet. The hair had been coloured blonde and tied in bunches. Her new dress was summery and made her look young. She was the exact opposite of the girl that had entered the club two days before. He took her hand and led her into the room. The Clients face beamed when he saw her.

"Who.... who are you? Where's my father?" asked the young girl clearly scared out of her wits.

Krom went over to the Client.

"Sir, I'm afraid we'll need payment in advance for such special orders. I'm sure you understand." he whispered in his Client's ear.

The Client nodded. Krom thought he'd have a better chance of payment in advance if the Client was staring at the goods when he asked for the cash.

"Don't worry Nikki" the Client said "Everything is going to be OK."

Krom smiled at the young girl and nodded too, mirroring the Clients actions, wanting to reassure the girl as well. Suddenly his face dropped to one of horror.

"How do you know her name? That was blacked out on the ID!"

"Does it matter? I thought you wanted your just payment. I am here to give it to you!"

Krom was utterly confused and didn't even have chance to react as the Client tossed his cane in the air, caught it by the bottom end and swung it an Krom's head. There was a blinding blue flash as the cane's silver pommel made contact with the side of his temple and the electrical discharge triggered. Krom's world went black.

-o0o-

In New Eden, as well as many different currencies  there are also many different languages and dialects. That also means there are many, many different curses and swear words. Kruul, the owner of the Pleasure Gardens was using many of these as he attempted to manually dock his cruiser. The hanger control room had not been responding and he couldn't raise Krom. Another five different swear words left Kruul's lips as a screech of metal on metal resonated through the cruiser indicating he had touched the docking pier again. With no technicians in the hanger control room he was having to try and dock without the help of the station's computer guidance and tractor beams.

Finally he manoeuvred the cruiser into position and felt the docking clamps engage. He left the ship running, heading straight for the hanger control room to dish out some pain to those useless tech's. He crashed into the control room in a rage to find the two technicians unconscious on the floor.

His first thought was Krom. The guy had just accepted 150 thousand ISK. That sort of money was enough turn anyone. Kruul accessed his own datapad and checked for Krom's location. His bio-tracker showed he was still on the station. Kruul took off running again with clenched fists and a clenched jaw. Five minutes later he burst into the suite to find Krom in the same state as the two technicians.

Kruul grabbed the ice bucket from the table and dumped the contents, including the half-full bottle of champagne over Krom's head.

Krom woke spluttering from a combination of freezing water, ice cubes and a glass bottle clunking against his head. He took a few seconds to realise where he was. He looked up and saw Kruul with a face of thunder.

"I..... I...... I....." Krom stammered terrified. He knew he must have lost the girl and Kruul was obviously upset. In fact looking at his face, Kruul was ready to explode.

Kruul grabbed him by his lapels and heaved him to his feet.

"We need to have a little talk. Because it is looking like you just let some posh nob walk out of my station along with some of my property. A certain very valuable young girl that was going to earn me a great deal of money over the next few years. We need to discuss how you are going to pay me back." he growled with barely suppressed rage.

-o0o-

The 'Client' was sat in the co-pilots chair in the cockpit of the pleasure yatch. Out of the window the stars hurdled past in a blur as the ship sped through the warp tunnel. He glanced over his shoulder and could see the young girl in the ships lounge area speaking to her father on the holo-unit through the half closed door. She was crying, but from a mix of relief and happiness.

"So all go OK?" asked the pilot.

"Yeah. I'm sure they are out looking for us but those guys won't search far from the deadspace pocket they are set up in. We're pretty safe. That slimeball who arranged the girl for me should be getting a bit of a grilling though. I did a quick medscan of the girl, she seems OK. I've sent an EveMail to the director saying it looks like we got there in time before she was put to work. May be he'll give us a bonus for saving his daughters innocence."

"Yeah right, if you say so boss. These rich types don't get rich by giving their hard earnt money away. So we good to head back to station?"

"Yeah, just let me check we've ticked all the boxes. You know what these mission agents are like!"

The Client leant towards a small keyboard and brought up the orders.

It has come to my attention that one of our Director's daughters has gone missing. She was last spotted in a disreputable nightclub in Vittenye, and we're afraid she's been forced into slave labor, or even prostitution. We request that you find her immediately and bring her safe and sound back to her family. I will give you the coordinates of this nightclub, I believe it is inside a pleasure complex, and I expect you to take care of the rest. Good luck.

"Yeah we're good. That tracker in her broach certainly made this an easier job than most. Anyway, all parts of the mission contract are met. Lets head back to base and lets collect payment and drop off that woman we had to bring with us. We'll hand her over to the authorities and they can decide if she was a victim forced to prepare the girl or a willing participant."

-o0o-

Krom whimpered face-down into the filthy mattress  His wrists and ankles were sore from where the chains chaffed his skin. However, the soreness in his extremities was nothing compared to other areas. He shivered as the cool stale air flowed from the vents high up on the wall over his naked damp skin. The room was suddenly bathed in light and loud dance music flooded in from the club floor as the door opened. Two men stood there. A huge Minmatar Brutor entered. The man behind him stayed back and was in shadow. Krom could hear him speaking. He recognised the voice. He worked for Kruul too running one of the bottom-end clubs in the bowels of the station.

".....and its 30 credits for half an hour or 50 for the full hour. He aint checked for disease so use protection. You break him, you bought him. As he's doing 20 clients a day. Thats 600 creds a day and we think he'll last a couple more months so that's 36 large if he's unusable after you. You damage him, either you pay or you take his place! We don't care. There is a hose in the corner to wash him down after you've finished."

"Fine. I'll take 30. Don't worry I'm sure he can take what I have in mind." With that the huge Matari man handed over some credit chips and closed the door. The room went black again. The only sound was the metallic clink of a belt dropping to the floor and the soft murmurs of Krom repeating "No, no, no." over and over again.

Two Types of Eve Playstyle? BB46 - The Main Event.

Blog Banter 46: The Main Event

"EVE Online is a unique piece of science fiction that is ‘participatory’." - CCP Seagull, December 2012

EVE Online is heading into its Second Decade with renewed vigour and a new development strategy. At the CSM Summit in December, Executive Producer CCP Unifex and Development Director CCP Seagull explained how future development and expansions will be broader in scope than recent "collections of features" stating that CCP "want to create something more inspirational, that players aspire to play."

With the return of Live Events such as the Battle for Caldari Prime, clearly the prime fiction of EVE is back in favour as part of this new thematic approach to expansions. However, EVE's story is very much a tale of two playstyles, with an entirely player-driven narrative unfolding daily in parallel to the reinvigorated backstory. Often, they do not mix well. How can these two disparate elements be united or at least comfortably co-exist in a single sandbox universe?

Are there only two types of people that play Eve? Can we lump everyone of the 500,000 accounts into one of two groups? Gamers or Roleplayers. Well, I suppose sort of....

Gamers
Someone who really doesn't care about the back-story  the current story or the future story. They don't really care about the game's setting. To them Eve is like World of Tanks. They play for typical gamer reasons. PvP, amassing in-game wealth, levelling a character, to relax, to socialise, to expand their empire, to win. They either don't care about live events or are actually against them claiming developer time would be better spent on game mechanics/improvements/graphics etc. There is also the cry of "Its a sandbox game and it should be 100% player action controlled.".

Roleplayers
Sci-Fi geeks who play as their character in the alternative universe that is Eve Online. They read all the fiction and articles and roleplay with their character in game. If their chosen corporation takes a policy against their in-game 'beliefs' then they move corps. They want CCP to continue the backstory and ongoing wider reaching storylines. When CCP runs a live event, they come. ;)

So is that it? Of course it isn't if you want to get picky. They are the two ends of the spectrum. They are the red and violet. In between we have the oranges, yellows, greens, blues and indego's! And we've all met some of each on our travels through New Eden.

Take me for instance:-

I'm really somewhere in the middle of this, may be a tad more blue than red. I do not roleplay in-game, but I love the lore and fiction of the Eve universe. If you hop over here to the fiction page on this blog you can read a variety of stories I've wrote set in the Eve-O universe. Even the story how my main, Drackarn, became a capsuleer. That's roleplayery for sure. But, I don't play Eve-O 'in-character'. Either in play style or typing in chat. I'm a sci-fi fan and want to see the Eve-O universe lore and fiction expanded.

But can the two styles, as Stan asked, comfortably co-exist in a single sandbox universe. The player-driven story and the CCP-driven story.

Yes and no. They can co-exist but never that comfortably. I doubt they can ever be united. You just need to read the forums to see how the players are. They see their own small area of the game as most important and in many cases are hostile to other areas of the game. The sci-fi guys want more CCP storylines, the sandbox purists want CCP to take a hands-off approach.

Like many things in Eve it is a balance. The Caldari Prime event is a great example. I'm happy how that played out. It has kicked off the storyline once again after a break and it was a good event, even if I couldn't be there in person because I'm -10. However, yes it was a "theme park" event. You could ride the ride, but I doubt anyone could have changed the direction. CCP has a story to tell and they are telling it. OK if the 1600 players at the event turned up in gank tier 3 battlecruisers and attacked the Gallente dreadnoughts then CCP would have had a major problem. I don't care how those dreads were fit, 2,000,000 DPS would have made the outcome very different!

Purists of the sandbox argued strongly that this event, and some of the ones before it, do not belong in the sandbox unless the outcome is 100% determined by the players. However, that does not make for good story telling. What if the Caldari had won and the Titan remained, back to the boring stalemate we've had for years?

There needs to be a balance and CCP needs to cater for as many different player groups as they can. I do feel sometimes that CCP are scared of the term "roleplay". Do they think it will put new players off? They seem to prefer the term "Space-combat simulator" rather than MMORPG which could be tied to Eve very easily.

I also think that CCP are realising that player-driven content is currently, shall we say, missing the big bang? With 99.99% of major null-sec entities blue or having some sort of non-aggression pact on structures, what interesting stories are coming out of null-sec? The occasional super gank? Apart from the weekends revenge tale there is very little interesting happening currently.

The Eve-O lore, back-story and live events are all optional. If you don't care, don't get involved. So let us all allow CCP come into OUR sandbox with their bucket and space and make us some sandcastles once in a while. The FF Countdown, Dying a Lot and Enaluri

With me visiting family on the way to Iceland for Fanfest I have but a mere three days of work left before I leave. Thursday is my last day in the office before I jet off in the wee hours of Friday morning to London Heathrow. I am supposed to be on one of those huge Airbus A380-800 flying elephants with wi-fi so looking forward to trying to play Eve at 38,000 feet!

I'm busy preparing for the visit and digging out my Fanfest clothes. Whilst this does include Eve T-shirts it mostly involves clothes that I wear once a year. Thick jeans, long sleeved shirts and coats are not really needed in a country that rarely drops below 10oC in the coldest winter and for most of the year stays above 30oC peaking at over 50oC!

However, that means I also only have 4 evenings of Eve playing left to make my killboard look acceptable. I am having a bad month. A very, very bad month.

March was my best month for solo PvP in over three years. I was Chuck Norris (sorry Loren). I was killing right, left and centre. I was having a ball! Then April arrived and I forgot how to play Eve. I just keep getting assploded no matter what I do, things are not going right for me at all. I swear at one point over the weekend I came back to the computer after going afk, thought about undocking, and my ship just exploded in the hanger!

The month did start OK and I have had a few sessions where things have gone my way.

This guy died to me after a good fight, big shells penetrate frigate armour fairly easily. He came back and tried again. Same result. To be fair to him I did swap the fit whilst he was away.

The loot fairly decided I'm been a good boy and dropped this 30m ISK MWD for me.

I think it was after that drop, it was decided by some higher power that, given March, I was having too much fun I should be punished and hence I started to die, and die, and die.

So I'm not really helping. Then again, whilst my personal contribution to the war effort this month is similar to North Korea's contribution to world peace, things have been going well for the Gallente Federation.

Leaked intel the previous weekend indicated that the Caldari were gearing up for a major offensive from their base of operation in Enaluri. As the Gallente Militia tends to agree that the best defence is a strong KILL THEM ALL! KILL! KILL! KILL!!!!!! The squid offensive never came and they have been on the back-foot since then.

Offensive plexing by the Gallente had pushed Enaluri up to 90% contested and the squids were trying to fight back when something unexpected happened. Enaluri jumped to 97% contested. Apparently the DUST514 bunnies captured an M-class planet for the Federation, pushing up the system status to almost vulnerable. The Caldari who thought they had another few hours, suddenly found they didn't. A short while later Enaluri fell.

This offensive appears to have had some disappointing outcomes. RONIN had apparently disbanded, the talk is IBS is about to throw in the towel too. The last week has seen minimal Caldari action and squid targets are hard to come by (my April losses have tended to be from neutrals, not war targets).

However, the pendulum will swing. The Caldari will hit the bottom, the Gallente will get bored and go wandering and do other stuff. Gallente activity will drop off, Caldari will gain a foothold and take the advantage. Suddenly the Caldari will be winning again, this will make the Gallente come back to fight. The see-saw of faction war will continue and as they say in BSG "This has all been before, it will be again" or something like that! Or more simply, we won this round, the Caldari won the last one, who will win the next round?

Into The Black - Aftermath

Oh noes! It's Fiction Friday. Your escape pod is here to Ways of the Mew where the QCATS look Poetic Stanziel's March kill database and find that yes, they have been killing a lot in Eve!

Below is the finale of the 'Into the Black' series that has now been running for 14 weeks! Wow doesn't time fly! I hope you enjoyed it. Next week I have a standalone piece and then the week after that I'll be at Fanfest reporting on what happened on the Thursday in Rek.... Reyc..... Reykyu..... the capital of Iceland!

Into The Black - Part 14 - Aftermath

Private Kikshana held his breath. The target was lined up perfectly in his sights. All he needed to do was squeeze the trigger and he would end their life. Suddenly the fox smelt something in the breeze and bolted into the sparse undergrowth. The Private didn't care, if he'd fired they'd have been hell to pay. You don't discharge your weapon whilst on guard duty unless you are under attack or want to spend 6 months in the stockade. Kikshana pondered the choice there, would six months in the stockade be any more boring than this? He looked back to the large metal doors that were built into the mouth of the cave some 100m from his bunker. Every few days a small dropship would approach, enter the facility and depart a few hours later. He had no idea what was inside those huge doors, but he had been assured that this facility was of the up-most importance to the the State. He lazily walked around the small guard-bunker taking in the scenery. Whilst it was a barren planet, the atmosphere was breathable thanks to the terraform stations and there was some scrub and mammalian life. It would be a century or more before the planet was truly habitable. The small amount of plant and animal life had been brought here by freighter to get the cycle of life started early. The rock formations were breath-taking. At one point this planet had been a lava planet but had cooled millions of years ago. However, whilst the scenery was interesting, it was still a boring deserted planet.

Kikshana was gazing at they sky. It was dusk and the stars had started to faintly appear in the greying sky. A flash caught his attention, then several more directly ahead. He tapped the comm link on the side of his helmet.

"Control. This is Perimeter One. I'm seeing, erm, something, in the upper atmosphere directly above us."

"Perimeter One, this is Control, confirmed, we see it too, stand by."

Usually when he got that BS from Control they'd disconnect and he'd be waiting half an hour before they even thought to tell him to stand down. This time they had accidentally left the comm link active and he could hear feint voices in the control room.

"Well I don't know who they are! This is supposed to be a restricted system. What the hell are 6 unknown signatures doing on my radar?"
"Sir, we're repositioning a surveillance satellite now. We don't have anything else to show us what they are. They are not answering hails."
"Any response to our urgent call to Central Command?"
"No sir. Its strange. I cannot reach any of the Directors on the secure channels. Sir, satellite is repositioned. They are.... Phoenix class dreadnoughts sir, but they are State Navy. Friendly sir."

The officer picked up his headset and was about to hit the activate button when he noticed the link was still on.

"Perimeter One. Stand down. Contacts are identified as friendlies. Repeat contacts are friendlies."

The Commander of the base shook his head slowly and solemnly  He knew they were State Navy but not friendly. There was only one reason why six dreadnoughts would have jumped without warning directly above his facility. He grabbed his datapad and tapped out a three word message to his wife as fast as he could.

Private Kikshana tapped is comm link again.

"Control, roger. But it appears the contacts are launching ships. I'm seeing, 6, no 9, wow, now over a dozen engine contrails on approach sir. Not sure what dropships they are sir, I can only see engine flares in the atmosphere but they are moving fast. Erm.... real fast sir....."

The Private had approximately two seconds between the time the objects were close enough to see they were not ship-to-surface craft but were in fact citadel torpedo's and the time when he, and everything for approximately 15km, was vaporised.

-o0o-

Executor Heth shut off the monitor that focused on the molten crater. The high-resolution camera on the lead dreadnought had shown him the operation had been a success.

He pressed a button and a few seconds later his personal assistance Miss Marisaki entered.

"Yes Executor?"

"Miss Marisaki. The 2nd facility has been destroyed. How are we doing with the board?"

"Sir, they are talking. We have everything we need to bring formal charges."

"There will be no formal charges" Heth said in a cold-tone.

"Sir?" Given his recent behaviour, Marisaki was very worried.

"One of them will have been leading the project. He was killed in a accident or something similar, heart attack, whatever. Make it happen. The others, let them sweat under interrogation a while longer and then give them the news about the project leader. Make it clear that if they try anything like this again, I will not be so lenient. Then release them."

"You are letting them go?" Marisaki was astonished.

"Now is not the time for the entire board of a mega-corp to be charged with crimes against the State. So we make an example of the ring-leader privately to keep the other board members in-line. Other lower level conspirators will be dealt with as well as the Admiral who hid all this from me, but now is not the time for a media circus. Least of all we want anyone finding out the real reasons for this incident. We've had enough problems from CONCORD over the unprovoked OMS incursion and I've have had to imprison one innocent Admiral to keep them and the Gallente happy. Now go!" Heth dismissed her with a wave of his hand.

-o0o-

The frigate pilot adjusted course towards the stargate to compensate for a capsuleer ship that had cut him up. It would be another few minutes before he would be in range to jump. The pilot wondered why the Admiral didn't take a Navy capsuleer pilot, they got priority at the gates. Then he thought it was easier to get a standard pilot like him rather than arranging an egger. More questions would be asked and given the woman the Admiral brought on board he assumed he didn't want any questions asking. It was not the first time he'd done this sort of job. There had been a number of times he'd ferried high ranking officers and executives to the Gallente border zone complete with a..... the pilot wondered what the polite term would be? A companion? The Caldari and the Federation may be at war, but people still had needs, and the Gallente stations still were the best for that. The pilot chuckled to himself "That dirty old Admiral probably won't last the weekend with that hot piece of ass he brought on board".

Of course the pilot had no idea that was what the admiral wanted him to think. With Heth rounding up everyone connected with Project Turncoat the Admiral had ran. He wanted to make the pilot believe he was going for a dirty weekend with some tart like many of his officers did. So he'd booked into a resort one jump from Gallente hi-sec. Staying in low-sec meant that his background wouldn't be checked by crossing the border. He had called an agency to get him a girl. To anyone looking at his travel plans they'd just see what they wanted to see. Then when on the station he'd lose the girl, get some fake ID and cross into Federation space and hide. The State and Heth would never find him there and he had enough cash in his case to live on comfortably. The irony had not been lost on him. He was doing exactly what the two civilian fugitives had been trying to do before they were killed in the Nyx destruction.

Originally the girl had simply been brought along as cover. But now, well away from Caldari hi-sec the Admiral was starting to relax. He had begun to undress her. He thought he was paying for her company so he might as well get his monies worth. The 'brace for jump' alarm sounded as he pushed her back onto the bed.

Up in the cockpit the pilot locked in the next stargate and started to spool up the warp drive. As the cloak from the stargate dropped the threat indicators lit up immediately. He looked at the scanner and saw he had been locked by a Legion Strategic Cruiser. It was disrupting his warp drive and had engaged stasis webifiers. They weren't going anywhere. But the ship hadn't fired. The pilot pressed the intercom for the Admirals quarters. No response. He pressed it again. Still no response. He pressed a third time and the screen lit up with the admiral's face in a fury.

"WHAT?"

"Sorry Admiral. We've been pointed and webbed by a capsuleer."

"What?" The Admiral now looked scared. "Patch me through to that capsuleer!"

"This is Admiral Hakkana of the Caldari State on official state business. I would recommend that you disengage immediately otherwise the consequences will be severe!"

"Admiral Hakkana, greetings. I would disengage as you suggested, but then I would be disobeying direct orders from Executor Heth and I'm sure the consequences would be substantially more severe." replied the capsuleer.

The Admirals blood ran cold. He was about to plead with the capsuleer, to offer him a bribe, anything to save his skin. However he didn't have chance as the pulse lasers tore the frigate to peices.

-o0o-

President Roden signed off the final stack of executive orders for the day. His aid took the datapad.

"Any news of Asia?" the President asked.

"No sir. To be honest sir, the word from the Navy is that they doubt they'll find any more survivors in the wreckage. With all the EMP ordnance used, it is quite possible that her conciousness was lost in transit if her current clone died as the Nyx went down."

"Well CONCORD are blaming the Caldari for the incident at least. And what of our guest?"

"Singing like a canary since the Black Eagles extracted his wife from under the nose of the Templis Dragonaors sir. His account of the last week leading up to the last moments of the Nyx corroborate the story we assumed. He was intelligence officer for their version of Asia, charged with capturing the two fugitives  During the battle he decided to defect due to the questionable techniques of his superior. He, Asia and the the two State fugitives were trying to get to the shuttle bay when the Nyx broke apart. He became trapped the right side of an emergency blastdoor that slammed closed between them. He said he saw the three get blown into space. We're getting some great intel from him but are running out of time. He said he'd assist for a week in return for us placing him and his wife somewhere safe in the Federation away from the State with new identities. We're pretty sure he's telling the truth, the detectors are all green. It would seem he has no idea why the State wanted those two civs dead, he guesses they had intel on a defensive weakness or military secrets, something like that. But in the end its just a guess and his guesses are no better than our theories. To be honest sir I'm not sure it matters, the defection of a State Intelligence Officer is one thing, but one that the Caldari believe died in the battle, it's the intelligence coup of the the decade!"

President Roden nodded and the aide turned to leave. There was a lot of money invested in the Asia Project's infrastructure, but starting all over again with a new agent would require another injection of cash as well as a willing volunteer. He went back to the budget reports wondering where he was going to find half a billion credits laying around.

-o0o-

The two men speedily approached the cargo ship which was sat on the concrete landing pad. The starport maintenance buggy made an odd whine from its old, poorly maintained motor. The ships cargo bay doors were open and they could see dozens of cargo containers stacked high. The starport was hardly like ones at the heart of the Federation. On this backwater planet it consisted of half a dozen concrete pads, a small control tower and a hanger for storage. This was the edge of the Federation and a far cry from the central core worlds.

"You sure its just two chicks?" the larger of the men said in a low tone.

"Yes. I know Mik in the control tower. He said its two women that have been handling the ship. Their manifest says they are carrying MTAC parts for a mining operation and have stopped here on route for minor repairs. This is a dead-end system! Nobody stops here en-route to anywhere! Plus Mik says another ship he knows as a covert Serpentis blockade runner was supposed to be here at the same time but they got held up and relogged a landing requested for 48 hours later. Since then that cargo boat here has been making excuses to stay longer."

"So you think they are friends with the Serps?"

The smaller man rolled his eyes.

"The boss don't employ you for your cognitive reasoning does he?"

"Hur?"

"No dum-ass. The cargo ship the chicks are in must be loaded with boosters or some other contraband. They were going to meet the Serpentis here to trade the goods but the Serps got delayed. So they are hanging around pretending they got issues with their ship! All we has to do is rob the chicks and steal the loot before the Serps get here."

"We's only gonna rob them?" the larger man whined.

"Well I suppose ain't nobody about. We could have some fun if..... holy shit! Get a load of that!"

As the buggy slowed at the bottom of the ramp a stunning woman emerged from the cargo bay. Her jet black hair glistened in the early morning sun. Her revealing clothes showed off her flawless skin. She was joined by another woman a few seconds later. Whilst not quiet as attractive as the first, she would be considered beautiful on her own. Younger with flowing chestnut hair. Again she was barely dressed, her outfit was more suitable for a night out in a Pleasure Hub than working on a cargo ship.

"Hey guys. Can we help you?" the black haired woman called as she walked down the cargo ramp towards them.

"Yeah" sniggered the smaller one of the two as he jumped from the buggy and started up the ramp closely followed by the larger man.

"We wondered if you could fight back as we show you what a real man feels like. We like it rough. Oh that is before we steal all those boosters or shit you have in your hold." he said producing a scrambler pistol from his pocket. "Play nice and we'll let you live."

"Oh dear" the Gallente woman laughed "You cannot be serious!" she almost doubled-up laughing.

The two men looked at each other confused. These women were supposed to be begging them not to hurt them, not laughing in their face.

"I'd not be laughing if I was you!" the smaller man said, a touch of uncertainty in his voice "First I'm going to unload this into you," he grabbed his crotch with his free hand and shook it "and if you don't co-operate real nice then I'll unload this into you!" he said whilst waving the pistol with his other hand.

"Which one do you want?" the black haired woman asked the brunette. The younger Caldari looking woman looked the two men up and down carefully placing her fingers on her chin as if she was choosing a sandwich in a cafeteria  "Mmmmmm. I would normally have said short-arse, but he's got the gun so may be you could go with him and I'll take the big guy?"

The two men look at each other in absolute confusion.

"I suppose that's fair, I mean I usually get the big one don't I?"

The two women changed places and started down the ramp towards the men who now stood open mouthed. As soon as the women were within a few feet, they struck. The black haired woman's leg came up in a lightening fast kick which knocked the small man's gun flying. The large man was about to move forward when the other woman jabbed him in the throat with the tips of her fingers. He made a croaking sound as he struggled for breath, his hands clutching his throat as he staggered backwards. She followed up with a well placed kick to the groin. The big man fell to his knees not knowing if to cradle his throat or between his legs. The short man faired no better as a series of kicks struck him in the head and stomach which knocked him down the ramp. The women backed off and the two men beat a hasty retreat back to the buggy. The women waved goodbye and turned back to the ship.

"Not bad Kara, nice moves."

"Thanks Asia. I had a fairly OK teacher." she smirked.

The two women laughed and then froze as they heard a rifle cock behind them. They slowly turned. The small man had retrieved an assault rifle from the buggy and levelled it at them.

"OK bitches. Strip! We're going to have our fun plus enjoy making you scream now and then we're...." the small man stopped as a mechanical sound emanated from the cargo ship. Two hatches, one on each underside of the ships stubby nassels opened and a pair of heavy neutron blasters dropped and pivoted to face the buggy.

The short man dropped the rifle immediately and stuck his hands high in the air.

"OK bitches, YOU strip!" Asia said with a laugh. The men looked on in horror.

"You heard the lady! Strip or be vaporised. 5, 4...." Kara started a countdown on her raised hand.

At the number three both men started ripping off their clothes as fast as they could and Kara paused with two fingers held in the air. Within 20 seconds both men stood naked, cupping their privates and looking very sorry for themselves. The two women were doubled up with laughter.

"Now get out of here!" Kara shouted and the two men turned to the buggy.

"Ah, ah, ah! No, you guys need to run as that buggy will be toast in 5, 4....." both men realised what she meant and started sprinting away.

"3, 2, 1." as she dropped the last finger to form a raised fist the blasters erupted in a maelstrom of subatomic particals and super-heated plasma. The buggy vanished in a ball of fire.

30 seconds later Dorn appeared from the cargo bay watching the two men run away, stark naked, into the distance.

"OK, no more of this! Next time we make it clear there is a man on board. That will stop this from happening every time we stop on an outer rim system like this!"

"Awww captain" Asia said in a comical whine "We girls need to have some fun on these long boring courier missions."

Kara went up to the captain and kissed him deeply.

"She's right. It's not fair I get all the action onboard is it." giving his behind a squeeze.

Dorn rolled his eyes and shook his head slowly.

"You two will be the death of me! Now, when you have finished playing with the locals, can we get this cargo ready as the Serps will be here in a couple of hours to collect. Then we've had an interesting contract through our broker. Apparently we've got this offer from an idiot in a shiny suit......."

The End

So there you have it. The Eve movie I'd like to see. Now just need someone to take the story and turn it into a screenplay and find a few tens of millions of dollars to finance it. Serenity cost $40m but Joss is much more hot property these days. So is Fillion and Kunis. Even Fox. Bah might need a bit more than a lottery win :(

Hitting a Hole in One on the 18th, Eve Online Style

I was flying around the other night in a Cockbag Thrasher which is really not a great idea when you think about it. Cockbags are great for camping, not for mobile PvP. But I was out of 10mn Thrashers and also low on armour/AC Thrashers, so thought I'd try sniping off some faction war acceleration gates.

I landed off a gate and almost immediately got an Ishkur on scan. I hastily loaded RF Fusion ammo and he landed just as the loading cycle finished. Now Assault Frigates can be a problem for Cockbag Thrashers. The key thing with a Cockbag is maintaining range whilst you get the required shots off. Usually this is not an issue on a stargate. The target jumps in, hits warp and the insta-lock Thrasher stops it dead. The pilot then has to realise he's pointed, not moving (the point cancels the warp) and then act. Those few seconds are usually enough to get two shots off.

The problem is when they come at you. Now with frigates and destroyers they either use an AB so are slow, giving you time to get the two or three volleys off, or use a MWD and that blows their signature radius up so high your guns do a lot more damage.

Now Assault Frigates get a bonus to the MWD signature radius penalty. This means they are fast and can close the 15km distance very quickly whilst not getting the normal 500% larger bullseye painted on them.

Anyway I thought I'd chance it.

BOOM! I fire the first volley of my pre-overheated guns and his shields vanish. I'm aligned away from him but my speed is nothing compared to his with the MWD running. I have him in mid armour with the second volley as he gets under my guns. Damn!

However his DPS is surprisingly light. Which is good as the Cockbag Thrasher does not have a single tanking mod. Nothing, not even rigs.

My armour is disappearing fast, my guns are not hitting him very well and it looks like I'm going to be podding home. I decide to leave the overheat on. May be I'll get lucky, otherwise I'll make him pay for the repairs on the loot I drop. Yes, I can be that vindictive!

Then he decides to try and make range for some strange reason. I'm in low structure and about to pop.....

BOOM! My guns fire and I see the gun icon instantly grey-out on the screen. I just burnt out my guns!

At the same time I also see the Ishkur vanish from my overview to be replaced by a pod. Did that really just happen. I rotate the camera to see a white wreck and a flashing orange pod warp off.

Yes, yes it did. My guns burnt out on the sixth volley that destroyed my target.

I wonder how often that happens?

Who Redecorated My Hanger?

Ever had one of the moments in Eve that you are sure something is different but you don't know what, yet it is completely bloody obvious?

Yesterday I logged into Eve to grab some screenshots for a fictional piece I'm writing for a post to be published on Friday 19th. My FFF's up to Fanfest are now all set up with part 14 and the finale of 'Into the Black' to be posted this Friday. The Friday after that is the one I'm doing the graphics for currently and will be auto-posted as I'm flying back to the UK that day. The Friday after that, the 26th, will be a report on Fanfest from Iceland. Brrrrrrrrrrr!

I needed to do some in-space shots as well for the piece. As Drunk 'n' Disorderly have recently reset standings to most of us in the area I thought I'd better log onto SiSi to do it. I don't want to be caught whilst I have the UI hidden taking shots of the station. I find there is a 400mb patch to download. Doh! Not a problem this month as nearly half of it I'll be in Iceland or the UK so screw you 20gb/month limit!!!

So I update, log in, hit the enter Captain's Quarters to take the screenies and I suddenly see this....

Hang on a minute. What the deuce? What is that slowly moving behind my right shoulder? An Amarrian BS? Let me log in another toon in a different station.

I watched for about a minute as a Hyperion, a Megathron and a Tempest slowly travelled up the....? Erm....? Docking tube? Which gave me a case of WTF?

Yes, there are ships cruising past the hanger in the background. But hang on, isn't everything a bit more shiny? I log on to Tranquillity to compare side-by-side and yes, we have changes in the CQ!

Now I'm not a big one for the Eve-O forums. Too flamy, trolly and several other completely made-up words for me. But I had a quick look to find an explanation and yes, the station interiors have been given some V3 lovin'. But wait..... that's not all...... apparently capital ships have also had the same! Jump in the Archon!!!

Nice! I wonder what else we have here? A quick poke around the forums reveals nothing else to prick my curiosity except this....

Apparently capital wrecks are no longer dropping on the test server which led some to believe it was a bug. CCP BunnyVirus, who apparently is a 3D Artist, gives a clue with a response of "not so fast youngfella, you will get your new capital wrecks when we are done with them" Mmmmmmm. So new capital wrecks then!

Into the Black - Part 13 - The Last Stand

Fan Fiction Friday! Your escape pod is here where The Ways of the Mew explain what a Cockbag Thrasher is, where the set up came from and how to use it to effectively assplode your enemies whilst laughing evilly! Muhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha......

Into the Black - Part 13 - The Last Stand

The lights flickered in the dark. The cargo bay was a mess, but the movement had stopped. Artificial gravity had been restored. Dorn picked himself up and saw Kara a few feet away. He rushed over and helped her to her feet. She was groggy from being knocked around.

"What happened?" she asked coming around.

"I have no idea. I would have said we crashed, but we're nowhere near a planet."

Asia appeared from behind a stack of crates. Before she could speak a shot rang out and narrowly missed them. They dived for cover and Asia returned fire. She could see the Caldari assassin was still within the small shuttle, she fired again.

"Look to our left, there is a tear in the hull by the outer doors. I'll pin the Caldari down, you run for it! Get off the ship."

Dorn looked at her in shock and confusion.

"We've been scooped into the hanger of a Nyx supercarrier! Now run!"

-o0o-

Heth turned off the holo-projector. His clenched fists shook with rage. Of all the challenges he'd faced, of all the problems he'd overcome, everything was now in the balance.

It wasn't industrial secrets the fugitives knew, it was an illegal weapons development program. A weapons system that would could unite the other Empires into siding against them. The mega-corp board had been honest at least, but they didn't have much of a choice. How anyone could be so stupid as to try and modify and weaponise Sansha nanite-tech was beyond him.

Heth opened a comm-link to the Task force commanded.

"Yes Sir Executor Heth?"

"Report Admiral."

"Yes sir! The Proteus was captured. One of our special ops Tengu's was able to piggy-back onto the craft and launch boarding parties. However, a Federation Nyx moved in and had scooped both ships."

"Admiral I want that Nyx destroyed now! This has gone on long enough! Those fugitives must be eliminated!"

"Executor, we have a Tengu, crew and operative on that Nyx. There is then CONCORD to consider, we've jumped into the Gallente in direct contravention of the agreement made......"

"Understood." Heth cut him off "My order still stands, that Nyx must be destroyed and the fugitives eliminated."

"Yes sir!"

-o0o-

Dorn and Kara squeezed through the rip in the outer hull and tumbled down to the deck of the Nyx's huge hanger. Dorn looked up at the Tengu and Proteus locked together. Other people were climbing out of the wreck and fire-fights were breaking out between the two enemy crews.

Dorn dragged Kara away from the mess as the super-carrier shook. Dorn knew the Caldari had primaried this ship with the intention of ending the chase here.

They started running to the far end of the hanger bay as more and more people spilled out of the two entwinded cruisers. They got to the end of the hanger and burst into a corridor.

"Where are we going?" panted Kara as Dorn charged on.

"As far away from the fighting as possible!"

They continued down the corridor until they came to a junction.

"I need to rest a second!" Kara said whilst leaning against the wall. Dorn looked down each side of the two corridors. They were empty except for the wafts of smoke that was leaking from the ventilation system. The red light from the alarms was making the smoke glow. The supercarrier was obviously taking a pounding from the Caldari fleet. He glanced back at Kara who was bent over, exhausted.

He knew they needed to move soon.

-o0o-

Asia fired another volley of shots at the ships door forcing the Caldari assassin to duck back inside. She checked her clip, only half a dozen shots left. The Caldari assassin fired at Asia's position but was wide. Asia returned fire trying to keep her pinned in the small craft.

Time. She needed to give Dorn and Kara time. If they could make it to one of the Nyx's escape pods they'd be OK. The massive battle erupting outside in space meant that any small ship could easily escape unnoticed. The Nyx probably had many small ships they could use most having warp drive and the ability to travel through stargates. And if she could give them time, they would make it.

Another shot from the Caldari struck close to where Asia was taking cover. She returned fire, each passing second meaning Dorn and Kara got further away from this assassins grasp. The ship groaned and the cargo shifted slightly. The inertial dampeners are damaged and this ship is getting a right kicking from the enemy fleet thought Asia. She then spotted it, a rack of cargo crates by the shuttle was leaning over, a fixing strap strained to keep the stack of crates upright. Asia watched the door of the shuttle for the Caldari agent. As soon as she saw movement she fired once at the door forcing her opponent back and then once at the stack of crates. Her shot was perfect and severed the strap. The entire stack of cargo crates came crashing down on top of the shuttle burying the doorway under a mass of twisted metal.

Asia stood, surveyed her handiwork and made for the tear in the hull.

In the Yulai system all hell was breaking out on  the CONCORD Bureau station.

"This is against all edicts we have issued!" argued one officer.

"Well what do you want us to do? Send a ship down there and tell them to play nice?" another responded sarcastically.

"We need the old man to get onto Heth and Roden and bang their heads together. We ordered an end to this crap five years ago and this is the first major engagement outside the capsuleer militias since then. Something has happened and I hate not knowing what"

The senior members of CONCORD continued to argue around the table what should be done as reports continued to flow in from the battle raging in the system of Old Man Star.

Dorn was about to tell Kara to come along when movement caught his eye. He instinctively went for his gun. Asia came around the corner from the hanger bay and he relaxed. Kara smiled to see her and she in turn returned the smile. She opened her mouth as if to say something but there was a flash and the smile vanished from Asia's face replaced with one of shock. She fell forward revealing the Caldari assassin standing behind her with her blaster pointing down the corridor. Dorn saw the blackened hole in the back of Asia.

"I think its fair to say our cloning units on what's left of our ships are out of commission so no coming back to save the day this time I'm afraid. She's out of commission  permanently " the Caldari assassin yelled down the corridor. Dorn grabbed Kara's wrist and took off down the corridor.

Dorn had seen the direction sign for the escape pod and was now sprinting down the dead-end corridor to the airlock at the end, Kara was just behind him. He opened the access panel covering the controls at the side of the airlock door. As he went to push the large red 'open' button there was a massive flash. Dorn was blown back against the wall and collapsed. Kara spun around to see the assassin pointing her blaster pistol. She had shot out the escape pods control panel from 50m away.

Dorn staggered to his feet, his hand blacked from the blast. The assassin smiled and advanced.

President Roden stared at the monitor. Admiral Toolong was filling him in on the last 10 minutes. It would appear that the Caldari task force had jumped into the Old Man Star system and fighting had broken out. The Admiral could not say for certain who had fired first but it hardly mattered.

"Then they lit a cyno and brought their capital ships in."

"What about the Proteus?"

"That came through a few minutes later. Then all hell broke loose. The entire Caldari task force went after them and ignored us."

President Roden pondered the statement.

"They had some sort of Tengu retro-fitted for in-space boarding operations  It clamped onto the Proteus and wouldn't let go. Then our Nyx scooped them both into the hanger. Since then the Caldari have been hammering the Nyx. We cannot keep it up much longer sir. They have just too much firepower."

Roden didn't know what to suggest, there was no time and appeared to be nothing he could suggest other than to order the Admiral to try and save the Proteus crew in anyway he could. The Admiral had given him the expected "Yes sir!" but Roden knew from the Admirals face he had no idea how to achieve that either.

The Caldari agent had them trapped. The door controls for the escape pod sparked and hissed behind them. Dorn knew help was not going to be coming. Asia was bleeding to death down the corridor and with the Proteus so heavily damaged she would not be cloned again.

"Well, looks like we can finally have some fun together!" the agent smirked. She holstered her blaster.

Dorn moved to stand in front of Kara, shielding her from the agent.

"Oh Captain, so gallant! Protecting the lady from the evil Caldari assassin"

"At least you know what you are. And before you get to her you need to get through me." he hissed and went for his gun.

"Fair enough." the assassin said and with lightning reflexes grabbed her knife from her belt and threw it.

The knife struck Dorn in the shoulder and he went down before his gun was level, Kara screamed and the assassin advanced. Kara dove and fumbled for Dorns dropped gun but the assassin stamped on her hand. Kara screamed in pain. The assassin kicked the gun away and pulled the knife out of Dorn's shoulder. He grunted in pain.

"I'll take that, don't want you playing with it now do we? You might hurt yourself!"

She tossed knife behind her and it clattered down the corridor. She grabbed Kara by the hair and hauled her to her feet.

"Now tell me, who have you told about Project Turncoat?"

Kara looked confused as if she didn't know what the assassin was talking about. She glanced down at Dorn who was bleeding heavily on the floor.

"The weapons project developed at the facility you worked at. Who have you told?"

"Nobody" Kara screamed trying in vain to free herself from the assassins grasp.

"We'll see" purred the assassin. She span Kara around and twisted an arm behind her back and used her other hand to grab Kara's hair and pull her head back. She pushed Kara forward, keeping her tightly gripped as they approached the airlock where the controls had been blasted out. The hole where the panel used to be sparked from the ruined electrics. Kara's face was level with the mass of sparking and smoking wires as the assassin pushed her slowly towards it. The smell of burnt electrics and ozone assaulted Kara's senses. A few flying sparks struck her on her cheek and she screamed.

"Already? The Caldari agent asked. "Wait untill your face makes contact with some of those live wires, oh and the hot metal and....."

"Why don't you pick on someone your own size, or in fact, even bigger?" Dorns voice came from behind.

The assassin pushed Kara heavily into the airlock door. She crashed head-first into the metal door with a thud and fell, dazed. The assassin turned to Dorn who had unsteadily risen to his feet with the aid of the wall. A long red bloody streak was smeared on the side of the corridor where he had pushed himself up.

"Well Captain, I was saving you to last but if you cannot wait for me." the assassin purred.

Dorn stumbled towards her lashing out with his good arm. She easily dodged the attack and kicked him in the back, slamming into the wall. He grunted and turned around before charging at her again, trying to use his body as a battering ram. She flipped over him and he slammed face-first into the other wall.

"Really Captain. Why don't you just give up? I just need a little chat with Kara here and then me and you can have some fun."

Dorn growled and charged again, same result. A movement at the end of the corridor caught the assassins attention, Intellegence Office Garrett stood there. The assassin smiled at him.

"Ma'am. We need to get off this ship now" he yelled "I have transport."

"Wait there, I'll be two minutes minutes." with that she spun round and kicked Dorn in the face sending him sprawling next to Kara. The assassin picked Kara up again and slapped her hard around the face to bring her around.

"Wakey wakey! You don't want to miss your face melting now do you?" the assassin said cheerfully as she spun Kara round and grabbed her arm and hair.

Dorn groaned. He struggeled to get to his feet but collapsed. He reached out to try and grab the assassin but she was well out of reach. The assassin smiled at him.

"You know, I really believe she hasn't told anyone. But where is the fun in a quick death? Ready to watch this lovely face slowly fry captain?" Kara screamed as the assassin pushed her forward, her face stinging from the heat and sparks of the destroyed console.

Dorn tried to reach again but collapsed, battered and exhausted. His eyes flickered as he almost lost consciousness  Suddenly he was brought around. Had someone thrown water in his face? He looked up as the assassin dropped Kara to the floor, landing by the captain. Dorn wiped his hand over his face, it was covered with a silver liquid. The assassin looked incredulously at Dorn before slowly casting her gaze down. The point of her own knife blade was sticking out between her breasts. She slowly and unsteadily turned around. Dorn turned his head to see Intelligence Officer Dorn standing there shaking.

"I.... I..... I...." he stammered.

The assassin dropped to her knees clutching the blade. The look on her face was of utter shock. She tried to say something to Garrett but whilst her mouth moved no sounds emerged. She slumped forward, the hilt of the knife sticking out between her shoulder blades.

Dorn looked at Garrett and nodded towards Kara. "Save her" he hissed through clenched teeth.

Garrett was clearly in shock. Dorn repeated the commend more sternly and that appeared to bring Garrett around. He nodded and heaved the woozy Kara to her feet. She immediately bent down and tried to haul Dorn to his feet. The ship shook and a low rumble was heard.

"Don't" he gasped "Save yourself. Get out!"

Another explosion rocked the ship, the last one sounded much closer.

"NO!" she shouted "I'm not going anywhere without you! You want to lay here and die? Fine! But I'm staying with you."

Dorn looked at her in confusion he opened his mouth to speak but Kara grabbed his head and kissed him deeply. When she drew back he had a look of shock on his face.

"Now if you want more like that you'd better GET ON YOUR FEET CAPTAIN!"

Dorn laughed and with the aid of Garrett the three stumbled down the corridor. At the junction they found the unconcious body of Asia. Kara picked her up and the four hobbled down the corridor as the ship started to break apart.

"We're not going to make it" shouted Garrett as a conduit behind them ruptured and fire engulfed the area they had just been through. He was walking unsteadily supporting Dorn.

"Keep going" screamed Kara as she half dragged and half carried the unconscious body of Asia.

Another explosion buffeted them against the side of the corridor. The ship appeared to groan.

"The structure is failing!"

The three looked behind them as there was a ear-splitting sound of tearing metal and the ominous rush of escaping air.

-o0o-

From the bridge of the Wyvern super-carrier the Caldari Navy Admiral watched the Nyx break up.

"Inform Executor Heth the target is destroyed. Activate the return cyno and order the capital ships to jump as soon as they are capped up. Sub caps are to deagress and retreat through the stargate. Repeat all forces are to deagress from the Gallente and retreat."

The Admiral couldn't help but feel saddened. Whilst the Gallente were the enemy, and their mission was accomplished successfully, no human could witness such a massive loss of life and not feel moved.

CSM 8 and POS Changes for Odyssey

CSM 8

With Marc pulling out of the CSM 8 election I am truely lost at who to vote for. Last year was so clear for me, Hans Jagerblitzen. Now with Hans not running for a second term, I don't know who to vote for.

The vote matcher gave me a max match of 63% and the first five were "and who the smeg are THEY???" with Ripard Teg being the first familiar face with 53%.

The robo-blogger does appear to be the best match for me so I think I'll throw my weight behind Ripard!

What?

I need choose 14????????

POS Blog

So far Odyssey has not really revealed anything that has got me excited. Then again why should it? The last two expansions have been for me. Well, not me personally, but me as in a PvP/faction war player. I doubt there will be any expansions for a few years that will really get me excited as industrialists, miners, carebears and null-sec residents get some hot CCP lurvin'.

Today I saw the post from CCP Fozzie about the possible POS changes coming up in Odyssey. We all know CCP made big things about possible POS changes back at Fanfest 2012. They then looked at the code, pulled a disgusted face and said "Sod that for a game of soldiers!".

Then they received some "feedback" from the player-base. Now they are looking to see what they can do in the short term to help POS residents and owners whilst they take a careful the mess that is the POS code in the long term.

Occasionally I have operated from a POS. It's been rare, but needed some times. For example the lead up and the battle for Rakapas needed a POS so we could reship when battling the squids as we could not dock in the enemy controlled stations. Needing to reship between novice, small and medium complex's requires a POS when targeting an enemy system.

And what a ball-ache it is. However the new Dev Blog from CCP lets us know some of the plans they are working to for June's expansion providing the ancient POS code doesn't become self aware, take over the buildings temperature control and roast them (CCP said that, not me!).

Here is a condensed list of what they are hoping to achieve.

Private Item Hangers.
Excellent! One of the issues with sharing hangers is people will take stuffz that is not theirs either by accident or on purpose. This will help a lot!

Private Ship Hangers.
Apparently this is a lot more difficult to achieve but CCP are trying to sort this.

Stuffz Will Drop
By the sounds of it, if you destroy an array phat lootz will drop similar to a ship kill. Some items stored inside the hanger will be destroyed with the hanger itself, some will survive the blast and reward those who are bored to tears structure bashing. Note that if you unanchor the array you will destroy ALL THE THINGS!

Repackaging Mods in Hangers.
If there aren't damaged, then you can repackage and stack them.

Swapping T3 Sub-Systems
SMA's will allow you to change sub-systems on a T3. Apparently many wormhole dwellers are celebrating!

All Arrays can be Accessed Inside the Shield
You won't have to approach the arrays any more. Tiny winy drones will bring your stuffz to you!

Starbase Setup
Use the probing mechanic with the slide arrows!

Captial Ship Maintenance Arrays Don't Need Sov
Warning, these are not assembly arrays, so no building titans in low sec! These are the maintenance arrays only.

So some real improvements there. Nothing on the scale of what we were shown at Fanfest 2012, but a step in the right direction. Nice to see CCP listening to the players when they cry foul.

A Month of PvP in Numbers and Burn Jita 2013

Killin' By Numbers

143 Kills
I managed to assplode 143 ships and pods in March. That is my most kills in a month since I left the UK and moved to the Middle East three years ago! 3.66bn ISK destroyed. I don't know why last month has been so good in my crap TZ. I did have a couple of days off work with the flu including a Sunday which gave me a few hours more play-time than usual but still, I doubt that has resulted in such a jump.

62 Solo Kills
SMEGGIN 'ELL! How the hell did I get that? Never had anywhere near that many in a single month! Eve-Kill should count the number of solo kills on your stats so I can compare to previous months, but I'm pretty sure I've never got that many. That's only 3 less than my total kill count for January!

30 Losses
I've never lost so so many ships in one month.... ever! 560m ISK worth of ships have been assploded by ze enemy (and some 'friendlies', damn Matari militia*) during March. That is 18m ISK per ship on average. Shows you how many destroyers I've been flying this month! I guess the amount of solo'ing I've been doing is the main reason this is so high. Then again, with so much soloing is a nearly 5:1 kill/death ratio so bad? Historically when I was in GMT and flying regularly with fleets this was between 11 and 12:1. So going solo a lot has halved that pretty much.

26 Pod Kills, 0 Losses
I think this shows the Caldari farmers are still alive and well. I don't get it to be honest. Now the Caldari are down to warzone control level 1 is farming LP's really that profitable? Surely level 4 missions or such will net you more cash per hour than farming at such a low tier level. Oh well I suppose I cannot complain and will just continue cracking those pods open and scooping the frozen corpses and giving them to s810 jr for his collection!

1 Quake590 Kill
My ex-Nemisis isn't so scary these days. Now when we meet in similar ships it comes down to who fires first. In our last fight I did and he popped as I was in low structure.

3232 BC Rank
Throughout 2012 I bounced around the 5200 area all year. I was getting plenty of kills and big kills, they were just fleet kills. BattleClinic awards points based on the ship and what you kill it with, and then splits those points between those fighting. Kill a cruiser with five battlecruisers, you are not going to get a lot. Solo a Navy Frigate in a T1 frigate, you'll get loads! Since 1st January this year when I made a New Years Resolution to get out of the 5000's I've jumped up 2000 places!

200,000 visits
This weekend this blog hit the 200,000 views milestone. I know plenty of that will be people searching for Chuck Norris-isms and lolcats/demotivationals, but I'm happy. Yes I'm sure its a fraction of what the big-boys like Eveogander get, but I never expected to hit that in my first two years of blogging!

So all-in-all March was a pretty damn good month. April will not be anywhere as good in numbers as my Eve time is going to be massively reduced for the last two weeks of the month. 17 days and I start the long trip to Iceland via the UK for Fanfest!

Burn Jita 2013

When ever any information is released around 1st April I'm automatically suspicious. However, what if in a 'tinfoil-hat' way this was a stroke of genius on behalf of the Goons. Twitter is alive today with talk of Burn Jita on 19-21 April 2013. Is it an April Fools joke (the local removal story is obviously their main one)? Is it actually a double bluff? We know from last year that they can always start a day early to surprise those carebears trying to squeeze one more freighter full of goods in/out of Jita before the Goons start shooting.

Who knows, but it will be interesting whenever it happens.

*On the subject of the Minmatar militia attacking the Gallente Militia, the QCATS held a meeting here.
